A Note From Jen and Jane

If you read just one thing in the newsletter this week, please select the blog post in the link below from Hilda Weisburg. It is a call to action for school librarians to showcase just how much their work matters to the school community. Hilda will be visiting the Capital Region on May 17th (save the date!) and we will have rich discussion about our roles as leaders in our buildings. We owe it to our students, to our profession, and to the future to make the role of a school librarian invaluable.

Job Opening

Questar III is currently looking for an Itinerant School Librarian to work in Rensselaer and Germantown. Please share the job posting with anyone you know who may be looking for a position. This is a great opportunity for someone who is new to our field or just about to complete the requirements for their school library certification.

NYS K-12 Kids Safe Online Poster Contest

The NYS Office of Information Technology Services’ Enterprise Information Security Office is hosting the “NYS K-12 Kids Safe Online Poster Contest” this fall in conjunction with “National Cyber Security Awareness Month” activities. Attached is an informational flyer inviting students to participate in the contest which may be distributed to all parents, teachers and students in NYS public, private and home-schools.

The contest has four entry categories: Kindergarten – Grade 2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12. New York State winners will be displayed in the 2018 NYS Kids Safe Online Calendar and entered into the MS-ISAC National Computer Security Poster Contest which is held in the spring.

Summer Library Program Survey from NYSED

The Division of Library Development at the New York State Education Department is seeking your input.

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Ad Hoc Committee on School Outreach is researching ways to potentially increase partnering between schools/school libraries and public libraries for future Summer Reading programs. Currently, schools and school libraries are not able to join the CSLP consortium as members, but many schools have expressed an interest in joining CSLP and in greater participation in Summer Reading.

The committee has created a survey and asked the State Library to share it with public and school libraries and library systems in order to get as much input as possible on this topic. In addition to completing the survey yourselves, we also ask that you share it among your professional contacts in the education and summer learning communities so that CSLP has a wide variety of responses.

A link to this brief survey is located at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2017SchoolSurvey

Responses are due by October 7, 2016.

Questions about the survey or the CSLP School Outreach Committee may be directed to:
