90% Attendance Rule

While we understand and are empathetic to circumstances out of your control, there are attendance laws that all schools must follow.

In addition to compulsory attendance law, districts are required to enforce the 90 percent rule, which states that students in grades K-12 must attend class for 90 percent of the time it is offered to receive credit or a final grade. The 90 percent rule applies to most absences, including excused absences. If the student doesn’t meet this requirement, an attendance committee may grant the student credit or a final grade, depending on the circumstances.

Hays Hawk Debate places 2nd at Regionals

Big picture

Hays speech and debate made district history this weekend at the UIL Regional Academic Tournament at UTSA. All four Hays extemporaneous speakers broke to Regional Finals. Their performance, which culminated in three state qualifications earned Hays the 2nd place Regional Speech Team trophy.

Please congratulate the following students on their performance:

Qualifying for UIL State:

Jakob Zertuche: 2nd place in Persuasive Speaking

Judah Padilla: 3rd place in Informative Speaking

Jackson Juel: 1st place in Informative Speaking

State Alternate:

Alex Gilbert: 5th place in Informative Speaking

Jakob Zertuche also finished 2nd in Current Issues and Events, meaning he will represent Hays in the academic portion of the State UIL Tournament as well as speech and debate.

Congratulations to our One Act Play for their great show at Regionals!

Big picture

The Foxhole Circuit Company’s season came to an end tonight. Making it to Regionals is no small feat. Participating in hours and hours of preparation and rehearsal, sacrificing sleep and social activities, and then pouring yourself out for performances as cast and crew across the season. The UIL One Act Play competition for 5A schools starts with 251 schools and goes through multiple rounds. At Regionals the top 24 schools across Texas compete for the final 8 slots. Making it to Regionals is an incredible accomplishment and we are so proud of this amazing group!

Leandra Walls’ culinary arts classes have been getting to experience some international flavors lately. Students have been picking popular dishes from different countries and preparing them for class. So, they’ve gotten a little taste from places like Italy, Spain and even Laos. But one country that was not picked for its cuisine was France, so our own district chef RJ Spade with the Hays CISD Nutritional Services Department gave a demonstration on how to cook a popular French standard — Beef Bourguignon.

Student Pick Up Process

Please help Hays HS keep students safe by picking up your student at the curb in front of Joe Graham Gym. Talk to your student and remind them to wait for you to arrive at the curb before getting into the vehicle. This will prevent students from walking in front of other vehicles and busses. This will also help the flow of traffic.

Student Self Checkout Request / Questions Regarding an Absence

  • For self-checkout requests, please ensure your request is sent to us at least 24 hours in advance or the morning of the request, by 1st/2nd period. A student can only self-check out if they have a valid HHS parking permit.
  • If you have any questions regarding your student being counted absent for a class period, please contact your student’s teacher for that class period. The teacher will either forward a correction to the attendance office or explain why your student was not in class.
  • The cut-off time for picking your student up daily is 3:50pm.

Planning a College Visit Soon-Please read

Juniors and Seniors are only allowed 2 days per year to visit a university or institution of higher education. In order for this absence to be excused and not counted against the student, the attendance office needs a letter from the college/university on their school letterhead dated and signed by college/university proving the visit occurred.

New District Cell Phone and Earbud Policy

After consideration and continuing discussions with the district student advisory panel, teachers, parents and administration; Hays CISD has decided that beginning in 2022 - 2023, students will not be allowed to use their cell phones or earbuds during instructional time. This decision is designed to help preserve the quality and integrity of instruction. Students will still be able to use their district provided devices during classes, which connect to the internet on the district’s safe and filtered network. During an emergency, students will, of course, be able to use their cell phones. See Board Policy FNCE (Local) for additional information.

If a student's phone is confiscated, it will be returned to the student at the end of the day.

Students at Hays HS will be allowed to utilize their phones and earbuds during their lunch.

All Students are required to wear ID's

Hays High School is committed to a safe environment. As part of that plan, everyone on campus is required to visibly wear their school ID. Students will be provided with a free ID at the beginning of the school year. All ID's provided after that will cost $6.00.

If a student needs an ID they need to go to the Assistant Principal's office first thing Monday.

Hays HS closed to Meal Delivery Services

As part of enhanced safety at campuses, beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, all Hays CISD campuses will no longer accept deliveries from meal delivery services or restaurants for student lunches.

Parents may still bring outside food for their children if they plan to deliver the meals directly to their children during the child’s designated lunch period. All guests are required to follow existing safety protocols and check in with an ID at the front office.

1. Parents/Guardians must Raptor in with their ID.

2. Parent then hand the food to their student.

3. Parents may eat with student here on campus in the foyer.
