Thoughtful! Courageous! Invaluable!
Vote Esther de Berdt Reed!
Thoughtful- Reed raised money for soldiers
She founded the Ladies of Philadelphia, the largest woman's organization of the Revolutionary War. Her program and other organizations went door to door and raised $300,000 in 1778, which is equivalent to $5,516,000 today. She received the money from almost 1,600 contributors.
Courageous- Esther defied those who doubted her because of her gender
She coordinated efforts to buy linen and sew shirts for the soldiers. She wrote a book titled "The Sentiments of an American Woman" which called women to action to raise money and prove their worth.
Invaluable- Victory would have been far more difficult without her efforts
She gave the clothing to the men in George Washington's army so they would not freeze to death in the harsh winters of New England. Esther de Berdt Reed was called "the best patriot, the most zealous and active, and the most attached to the interests of her country."
