Roberts Middle School
Grit: Volume 26
Dear Roberts,
Did you know that the majority of energy is used in the beginning of the launch of a rocket? The bulk of the fuel used in a trip to space is in the lift-off phase when the rocket needs to escape the gravitational pull. Rockets need great speed and a huge amount of energy to escape the pull of gravity. This is also the same theory for many things we start in life. In the same way, personalizing small group instruction demands so much of our energy at the launch. As we are seeing the dividends of small group instruction, the process should be easier.
We must hone in on our skills that brought us this far. Roberts, we need to deliberately plan and personalize for small group instruction. In our PLC Data Meetings, we all designed a plan of action for each and every 5th grade student. This requires a considerable amount of fuel to escape the gravitational pull towards mediocrity. I want to challenge your thinking even further, because humans are different from rockets. A human being is the kind of machine that wears out from lack of use. Yes, there are limits, of course, but for the most part we gain energy by using energy. Think about it. We use energy by exercising to gain more energy. I believe small group instruction is the same way. Yes, I am stretching it a little, but you know what I mean.
Thank you for all that you do. As other schools are coming to Roberts to learn from us, we must continue to learn from other titans in education . Starting this Wednesday, you can wear any Spring Shirt (must be professional, but you define what Spring means to you) or Roberts T-shirt with jeans for the rest of the week. We are building something special here at Roberts because we hired the right people to do the task at hand.
