February 8, 2016-Mindset--Beliefs About Yourself
As we continue our journey of growth and as we strive to have daily conversations with ourselves, the idea of a growth mindset vs. fixed mindset is well worth our time. Let's take a look......
Every so often a truly groundbreaking idea comes along. This is one. Mindset explains:
- Why brains and talent don’t bring success
- How they can stand in the way of it
- Why praising brains and talent doesn’t foster self-esteem and accomplishment, but jeopardizes them
- How teaching a simple idea about the brain raises grades and productivity
- What all great CEOs, parents, teachers, athletes know
Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success—a simple idea that makes all the difference.
In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong.
In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.
Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports. It enhances relationships.

Let's share the importance of mindset with our students! Motivation is half the battle in our middle school environment; therefore, teaching a growth mindset could be life changing for our Hawks!
Blessings
"I'm not looking for blessings to come into my life, I'm looking to be a blessing."
Monrovia Middle School is extremely blessed to have Mrs. Tibbs facilitating our AAP classroom. The task that she has everyday to create and sustain a positive and nurturing environment while addressing the academic and social needs of our students who are having academic and/or behavioral problems is one that can present many challenges. The consistency that Mrs. Tibbs provides not only for our students but also for our teachers and administrators is second to none. In the RARE occasion that Mrs. Tibbs is absent, she is missed. Not only by the staff, but also by our students. She is the ultimate model for educators as we strive to "Discipline with Dignity."
THANK YOU Mrs. Tibbs for all that you do to for our teachers, students, and administrators. Your consistency, kind spirit, and the respectful way you assist us in holding our students accountable are a HUGE asset to MMS! WE ARE BLESSED!
YOU Talk to YOU: Health
YOU Talk to YOU: Enjoyment
Teaching 7th graders to extract DNA from strawberries, or really teaching 7th graders anything requires not only a growth mindset, but a great deal of patience. During a recent observation, Mrs. Holcombe exemplified what great teachers do. She is a content expert, facilitator of learning, and ultimately she is passionate about teaching kids. Observing a teacher who keeps students "the main thing" is very empowering. As the students were exploring DNA, mistakes were made, but Mrs. Holcombe allowed the mistakes to guide their learning. She kept them going with encouragement, a respectful tone, and never let go of high expectations. These middle years are not easy for our students or teachers; therefore, we must enjoy what we do and "Let peace be our umpire."
YOU Talk to YOU: GRIT
Mrs. Cuzzort utilized emoticons in order to make adjectives relevant in her students' lives. The task allowed her students to work together, share their background knowledge, and learn from each other. The relevance piece of our instruction is at the heart of GRIT for our students. Why would they WANT to come back to our classrooms? For Mrs. Cuzzort's students, the answer is clear, she is keeping it FRESH, EXCITING, and ultimately RELEVANT. You go Mrs. Cuzzort!
The traits of GRIT:
- Goal-directedness (knowing where to go and how to get there).
- Motivation (having a strong will to achieve identified goals).
- Self-control (avoiding distractions and focusing on the task at hand).
- Positive mind-set (embracing challenge and viewing failure as a learning opportunity).
