Westwood Elementary
Principal's Newsletter - July 2019
Summer is here!
As a reminder, our Parent/Guardian Survey is still available. Please take a few moments to let us know how we can improve our services and programs for you and your child(ren): https://forms.gle/QmLsBZtGNytdNsci9
Finally, we have started a campaign to raise funds to install water bottle filling stations. MDUSD has provided our first one, recently installed in the cafeteria, and we would like to see them placed throughout our campus! Please help us spread the word by sharing the link with family, friends, and employers: https://tapwaterwatch.com/campaigns/westwood-elementary-school/
I wish you all a safe 4th of July holiday, and enjoy the rest of the summer! We will see you in August!

Summer at Heather Farm!
Join The Gardens at Heather Farm for the Education Program’s Adult Summer Series, Wetland Ecology, on Thursday evenings from 4:30-6pm from June 13th through August 1st at The Gardens at Heather Farm. Get to know about wetland scientists and bird rehabilitators in our area. You will start out by learning about wetland birds, their rescues, and the rehabilitation process from the International Bird Rescue director, JD Bergeron. Then, find out how our wetlands are being monitored and restored from our local DVC professor, Marci Cole Ekberg and the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR) wildlife specialist, Virginia Guhin. Finally, become advocates locally as you continue to appreciate these invaluable habitats with SF Bay NERR director, Michael Vasey. We will be using our nearby Heather Farm Pond as a natural laboratory to practice monitoring, sketching, and journaling the changes throughout the summer. Field trips to the restoration and research sites will be included, times TBD. This series is especially pertinent to teachers who applied for the NOAA grant this Spring and will help guide their course content and ideas for the fall. I will be working with the Education and Environment Initiative (EEI), Project WET, and NOAA education specialists to provide units recommended for grade level focus areas.
Concerned about having your hands full with your little ones who are out of school? No worries! We will be teaching children in 1st-4th grades, concurrently, in the Wetlands Detectives Series. Their nature classroom topics will fit right in with the Adult evening topics. By the end of the program, they will become certified Wetland Detectives!
