Midas and His Donkey Ears

Midas was the king of Phrygia. He was known for his wisdom and greed. Midas was also famous for his donkey ears. One day he was judging a musical contest between the two gods Pan and Apollo. When he said that Pan was the better musician, Apollo got angry and gave Midas the ears of a donkey. Only his barber new about his ears and Midas had told him not to tell anyone. The barber couldn't keep the secret, so one day he dug a hole in the ground and whispered his secret in it. After he said it a bundle of reeds sprouted in the hole and every time the wind blew they would sing softly "Midas has donkey ears".

The Golden Touch

Midas was known to be very greedy because he always wanted to have the largest amount of money in the world. One day Midas was walking in his garden when he saw Silenus. He could tell Silenus had been drinking so he offered him some food and brought him back to Dionysos, the god of wine. To thank Midas Dionysos granted him a wish. Midas wished for the power to turn anything he touched into gold. He soon noticed the many disadvantages of having the ability. When he went home and tried to eat the food instantly turned into gold. Eating, drinking, and sleeping was impossible since everything turned to gold. He decided to go back to Dionysos for help. Dionysos was willing to take back the power from Midas. He told Midas to go to the Pactolus river and if he washed his hands in it the power would go away. Midas went and jumped into the river, washing his hands, and as soon as he did this the golden touch was gone.
