Book it Forward
Book It Forward has now begun! Book It Forward is a non profit organization that helps get books to kids who don’t have them. Did you know that 14% of people in the United States cannot read or write? We learned that the majority of brain growth happens before the age of five, so kids need to be looking at and hearing books read when they are little to have the best chance to become literate. If you can’t read or write as you get older, it is much harder for you to have a successful life. Idaho is one of only 6 states that does not fund public preschool, so lots of Idaho kids aren’t seeing or hearing any books when they are little. In order to help, we need to get more books to children who don’t have books in their home.
You can help by donating children’s books throughout the month of October by bringing them in and putting them in the large metal bins located around the school. The books can be gently used and do not need to be new. But they need to be in decent shape. Books can be in Spanish or French or other languages too. Think about what books you may have at home that you no longer read. Ask your neighbors if they have children’s books they no longer use. Make sure the books are appropriate for children ages 0-12. Our goal is to collect 1200 books to give to kids who need them, but we will bump that up if we get lots and lots of donations from everyone. Make sure to check with your parents before you bring in those books. Let’s all help kids in our community build literacy!
