Coffee Chat

For GT LEAD Parents

December 5th

OCT Library

7:15-8:15

(This is time parents to meet and greet with other GT Parents, Ms. Young, Ms. Whisman and Mrs. Griffin. Coffee and bagels will be provided.)

5th Grade

Your scholars are wrapping up their sales pitches/proposals for their very own apps based on intellectual traits (created in Google Slides). Each proposal includes a slogan, catchy name, icon, write up with reviews, and a bio about the creator. Students signed up for individual conferences with me (sign-in sheet and name plate kid created). I encourage you to have your student read his/her writing for any class out loud with you and have an editing session of your own. When they hear their written text read aloud, they notice errors and add details to clarify what they truly mean to say. It is a teachable moment.

Next week, students will present their ideas for apps in a "Shark Tank" type atmosphere.

5th Grade GT LEAD will also have a guest speaker, Mr. Richardson, who is married to our Kindergarten teacher, Anna Marie Richardson. He is an App Developer and former high school coach. He will meet with them on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in the OCT Library and will share how his idea for an app became a reality. We are excited to hear his real-life experience!

4th Grade

To go with 4th Grade Social Studies curriculum, students brainstormed the word "explore" and reflected on explorers of Texas and other explorers in the world. We discussed some of the reasons why people explore and what the motivation was for the explorers to come to Texas. Students also viewed a Blendspace, a collection of videos and articles, based on the Explorer's mindset. With each viewing they were to add to the explorer's mindset bubble map. Next, they ranked their top 3 research topics of places in the world they want to research and discover.

3rd Grade

Third graders are Thinking Like Disciplinarians and researching future careers. They are finding information through teacher-selected websites regarding educational requirements, the daily life of the job, and vocabulary used, as well as the best colleges in the nation and in Texas for that career.

Next week, they will be working on scripts for their career presentations. I will continue to post pics (created in Piccollage) like those again in the next newsletter. If you don't see your child's photo, stay tuned next week!

2nd Grade

One goal of OCT campus-wide is to work with students on inferencing. Second grade scholars spent the week practicing inferencing and proof writing with logic problems. Ask them about some of the symbols you see below and what they mean.

They also worked on listening and sequencing with a script, called "When you say Boo..."

Lastly, students set up ePortfolios in their Google Drive LEAD folders, and they have uploaded a favorite piece into it for the First 9 Weeks.

We also evaluated our Draw Starts. We looked for originality, and we discussed features of using space, the power of a title, and how details in a picture all help to tell the story of the drawing. We talked about point of view in a drawing and compared that to point of view in a book or story.

Students are uploading any daily work (both digital and paper) into their LEAD folders in Google Drive.
