Bowling for Gym!
On Monday the phy. ed. teachers and the classroom teachers took the kids to the Fort Atkinson bowling lanes to practice their skills bowling AND keep score. It was a challenging doing all of that math by hand and having fun at the same time, but the kids did great!
Science!
I've been so proud of the kids and how hard they have been working/staying on task for science that I just have to keep sharing pictures! We have started a new unit looking at mixtures and solutions. This week the kids were challenged with trying to separate a 3-part mixtures of gravel, power, and salt. Some of them tried some pretty crazy sifting and sorting techniques before they solved the problem. Below are a few pictures!
Reader's Workshop / Literacy
Our focus this week was identifying the pros/cons of using solar energy as a sole renewable energy choice. The kids did some deep reflecting and had to think about what we've discovered so far about this energy choice. When asked to write an opinion paper it was great to see all sides of the topic represented - some students felt that it's a pollution free, renewable energy choice that could help save the planet, while others thought the initial costs and batter upkeep were too expensive. It's so awesome to see 5th graders thinking deeply about worldly problems! Keep up the great work!
Everyday Math
There is a math text schedule for this Tuesday, February 16th. The test will focus on adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators (which links to finding a Least Common Multiple - LCM, or common denominator). It will also focus on having student simplify fractions (both improper and mixed number). Lastly there will be a section about measuring to the nearest 1/8th of an inch, as well as cm/mm. Please let me know if there is anything I can to help you at home. Please keep an eye out for the study guide to be coming home Monday night.
ANNOUNCEMENTS!
Valentine's Day Party
Thank you, thank you to all parents who donated their time and energy to send classroom treats & supplies, as well as valentines for all of the friends in our classroom! :) Hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing Valentine's Day weekend!
Winter Weather!
Winter weather is here and unless the temperature and wind chill is too severe, or it is raining, students will still be expected to go outside before school and during recess. With that said, please be sure to remind your child to bring coats, gloves, boots, snow pants, hats, etc. so they are prepared to be outside. Hiding out in the bathroom and hallways during these break time is not acceptable! Thank you for your help with this!
