Brunei is a beautiful place with flat coastal plains rising to mountains on the East. Natural gas and petroleum are plentiful. It is a tropical area with seasonal rains. The citizens there receive free education, and medical care, low-cost housing, food, and fuel. The political and economical decisions are made by the sultan who governs with a firm hand. The main language is Malay. The majority of the 408,786 people live in urban areas. Most of the people are Muslim. The capital of Brunei is Bandar Seri Begawan. There are many gorgeous architectures in Brunei such as the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin. Visiting Brunei is absolutely magical.

Geography and climate

Brunei is located in Southeastern Asia, bordering the South China Sea and Malaysia. It has a total area of 5,765 km sq. The climate is tropical, hot and humid. The lowest elevation point is South China Sea 0 m and the highest point is Bukit Pagon at 1850 m. It shares a border of 381 KM with Malaysia. It has beautiful beaches, coastal plains with green plantations and mountains on the eastern side. Moderate climate is conducive for tourism for most parts of the year. The environment is clean and pollution free. Seventy % of the area is covered with pristine rain forests and unspoiled coral reefs. In Brunei, visitors can have the unique opportunity to walk in the rainforest canopy which houses an abundance of birds, plants, micro fauna and mammals, such as the rare Bornean proboscis monkey, making up one of the world’s richest and most diverse ecosystems.

People and Culture

The main ethnic groups in Brunei are Malay 66%, Chinese 11% , indigenous 3% and others 20%. The official language is Malay but English and Chinese are also spoken. The official religion is Islam (67% of population). The other religions followed are Buddhism(13%), Christianity(10%) and others (10%). The population is 407786. 76% of the population lives in urban areas. Brunei is a prosperous country with one of the highest GDP rates in Asia. The literacy rate is 92%. Brunei is renowned for its art and skill in boat making, silver smithing, bronze tooling, weaving and basketry. Visitors will also find Malay weaponry, wood carvings, traditional games, and traditional musical instruments.
A major city in Brunei is the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan with a population of 22.000 people. The people of Brunei are called Bruneians. Bruneians enjoy a high standard of living. There is relatively little unemployment. The government provides free schooling, free medical services, and other benefits to everyone. Most Bruneian children complete elementary school and many go on to high school. The first university the country opened up in 1985 know as the University of Brunei Darussalam. Many Bruneians study at foreign universities because the government pays for their education.

Most Bruneians in urban areas wear clothing similar to that worn by people in Western nations. But many Muslim women wear an outfit consisting of a long skirt and a long-sleeved blouse, and a head covering called a tudung. In rural areas, many men and women wear loose shirts and sarongs, which are long pieces of cloth worn as a skirt and tied at the waist. Many people in the cities live in modern houses or apartment buildings made of brick or stone. Most houses in the rural areas are wooden and have thatched roofs.

Government & Citizenship

Brunei is a constitutional Sultanate. It consists of 4 administrative divisions. Brunei got independence from the United Kingdom on January 1 1984. Brunei follows a mixed legal system based on English common law and Islamic law. The executive branch of the government consists of chief of state Sultan and Prime Minister Sir HASSANAL Bolkia( he is the sultan and the head prime minster) , the cabinet, a religious council, a privy council and a council of succession. The legislative branch consists of a Sultan appointed legislative council. The judicial branch consists of Supreme court and judicial committee.

The minimum voting age is 18 years for village elections. Islam is the official religion but people are free to follow other religions. The last country election was held in 1962. Political parties are small and with limited rights. All govt. is appointed by the Sultan. The national anthem is "Allah Peliharakan Sultan" (God Bless his majesty the Sultan). Brunei is a small well to do economy dependent on its natural resources like crude oil and natural gas. Only Malay people can serve in the military and the minimum age is 18.
