KA Kindergarten Students Took The “Apple Challenge”
As part of their study of trees, Karen Acres kindergarten students in Mrs. Whitver’s class were in for a treat when their science lesson involved taste-testing apples. Mrs. Whitver shared about the various kinds of apple trees and the types of apples they would be taste testing—yellow, green, and red apples. Students received a clipboard with an apple tasting worksheet and carried their yellow, green, and red crayons to their apple tasting tables. Learn More

PreK-12 Math Curriculum Review Underway
Last school year significant work was carried out to both understand the current state of math instruction and student performance within our system and to understand the current landscape and best practices in math instruction. This year, a leadership team of PreK-12 teachers have been engaged in learning and will be field testing two sets of instructional materials with students within our system. The two curriculum materials that are being field tested are:
Illustrative Mathematics and
Eureka Math² During fall conferences, all staff and parents/guardians will be able to review samples of materials and provide feedback as part of the curriculum review process.
Learn More Reminder: Elementary School Assignment Change Requests Due October 18
With the opening of the new Valerius Elementary School in the fall of 2023, Urbandale Community School District is implementing
new elementary school boundaries beginning in the 2023–24 school year. Elementary school assignments are based on a family’s home address. School assignment letters were mailed to kindergarten through 4th grade families the week of October 3. To help with the transition to the new elementary boundaries, the school board approved the opportunity for current kindergarten through 4th grade students to stay in their current school, even if their home address is located within a different elementary school zone. As mentioned in the letter, if your kindergarten through 4th grade student is assigned a different school next year and you would like them to stay in their current school,
please complete this request form by October 18, 2022. (Note: If you did not receive your elementary school assignment letter, please contact Dr. Keri Schlueter
schlueterk@urbandaleschools.com or 515-457-5004.)

Student Meal Pricing and Payments
The federal waiver for free school meals was not extended to the 2022-23 school year; thus, families will need to carry a positive balance in their children’s school meal accounts in order for children to access breakfast and lunch while at school. Funds can be loaded onto student accounts electronically through TITAN or by bringing cash/check to your student’s building (please place in an envelope and include your student’s first and last name so the money is credited to the correct account). Online payments are preferred because they happen instantaneously. You can also add payments through the Titan app available on the App Store (for iPhone) or Google Play Store (for Android). Ticketing Moves Online in 2022-2023
Purchasing tickets for all Athletic and Performing Arts Events in grades 7–12 must be done online. Those wishing to attend events are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at
www.j-hawks.com/tickets. If you purchase tickets at the event, we will only be accepting credit card payments as there will no longer be a cash option at the gate. The only venue where cash payment will still be accepted this year will be for Urbandale Middle School football games. This is due to the lack of infrastructure at that venue. All other Athletic and Performing Arts Events will only be accepting online payments in advance or credit card payments at the gate. When attending events away from our home venues, we anticipate most opponents in the CIML will also be only offering online ticketing. To aid in the process of purchasing tickets in advance for away events, you may wish to visit
www.cimltickets.com.
