To see more about the Teacher of the Year recognition and news media coverage, visit https://www.4j.lane.edu/2018/09/oregon-teacher-of-the-year.
I am very proud and excited to work with you as we look forward to improving our craft at Churchill High School. Thank you, Keri for your excellent work.
My favorite Keri PR quote: "We must model civil discourse and provide students an opportunity for practice so they can navigate the workplace and the world responsibly and with empathy."
Rock star status!
In The Know
Open House - This is a big night. I am continually running into parents that are sharing positive messages about what a great place Churchill high school is. I know that you encounter similar conversations. The good work that we are doing is generating a very positive perception with the community. This means that Open House becomes an even more important event for our families. We have a high profile and this is the evening where we get to shine. We need to bring out our best.
I wanted to send out some helpful information to all teachers about our presentation to parents during 'Open House'. We discussed this in Operations last year and felt that it would be helpful to ensure that all parents receive similar messages about the classes we offer at Churchill. We discussed the following speaking points:
- Class size - It can be helpful to a parent to know what the size of your class looks like. It helps them understand what their children's class environment looks like.
- What will students learn? Parents want to know what it is that their child will be learning in your class. This is your chance to explain why your class is important.
- Communication - Parents will want to know how to communicate with you. This is a great opportunity to share email, voicemail, Synergy, ParentVue, office hours, etc.
- Academic Support - Parents will also want to know where their kids can go for help if they are struggling. Office hours, support opportunities, interventions built into your instruction, etc.
- Grades - Don't discuss grades or individual students. This will automatically send you down a path that will be difficult to pull away from. I will be reminding parents that they are not to engage teachers in discussion about their individual students and their grades. I will be encouraging separate appointments.
- Syllabus - Have your syllabus ready and available several different ways. Have them printed out, send them by email, post them on a website. Make it overtly easy to access.

Eugene IHS Opening Assembly
The Eugene IHS Opening Assembly will be held on Friday, September 28th. All Eugene IHS students will be excused to attend this mandatory assembly at South where the Eugene IHS student body from all 3 campuses (South, Sheldon, and Churchill) will come together as one school for a welcome assembly. Students will be excused from 1st and 2nd period and will return by 10:50am (late to 3rd). Attached is a list of students, by grade level, who will be attending.
Students Leaving Class - Please be sure to have students use a Hall Pass when leaving your class for just about anything. We have had several students come down to the office to connect with various people and we ask them for their pass. They have not a pass. Please be sure to help support this school wide effort.
For Disciplinary Reasons - Please be sure to call the front office (x5100) and have a campus supervisor come to collect the student, or at least let us know that the student needs to report to the front office. We cannot have students out of class, wandering the halls with no consequence. The classroom teacher is liable for the students safety until they have notified the front office, campus supervision, or an administrator of the concern and the absence.
2018 Construction Utilities Career Day on Sept 27th- CHS has 40 spots reserved. This is a good field trip. If students are interested have them see Mary Beth. Students will need to do field trip forms.
National Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. Please take some time to draw connections from your curriculum to historical events, leaders, accomplishments, culture, and contributions that we all benefit from. This is part of how we education such a diverse and amazing group of students here at Churchill High School.
