SLCS District Update

Superintendent's Update
Good evening SLCS Families and Staff Members,
I had the pleasure this week of being a Mystery Reader in Ms. Stidham’s and Ms. Toor’s third grade classes at Pearson. Our students are always such an attentive and polite audience. The opportunity to generate excitement in a young student’s mind through the joy of reading is a gift. I also had the opportunity while visiting the school to join in with some other students as they read book reviews posted on the walls in the corridor. Reading Pioneers!
Last week, we highlighted the CMS Science Olympiad performance at the Oakland County Regional Science Olympiad. MMS Science Olympiad, under the longtime leadership of Mrs. Miller, had a very good showing as well and placed 8th overall at the competition. The MMS team brought home medals in 9 events: 3rd place finish in Dynamic Planet; 5th place finish in Crave the Wave; 6th place finishes in Meteorology and Sounds of Music; 7th place finish in Write It Do It; and 8th place finishes in Bio Process Lab, Crime Busters, Mousetrap Vehicle, and Solar System. Congratulations to Mrs. Miller and all of the students and parents involved. Science Minded Mustangs!
Lastly, I want to make the community aware that the Lyon Township Fire Department is scheduled to hold active shooter training at South Lyon East High School this Saturday, March 19 from 9 AM - 12 PM. We are making you aware of this event so you are not alarmed if you see emergency vehicles on our campus during this time. We are proud of our partnership with the SLFD and pleased to provide the opportunity for them to train in our facilities. Multiple municipalities, ONE COMMUNITY!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Nurse’s Update: “Stomach Flu” - Is it really the flu?
We have seen an increase in absences lately due to the “stomach flu”. If you or a loved one is experiencing vomiting, stomach pain and/or diarrhea you probably have gastroenteritis, which is sometimes mistakenly called the “stomach flu”. However, the flu virus or influenza does not cause these symptoms. Influenza is a respiratory illness.
There are several types of gastroenteritis, but more than likely what you are experiencing is Norovirus, (or if it’s an infant or young child it could be Rotavirus). Both of these viruses are intestinal infections marked by diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes fever. They can also cause muscle aches and generally they just make you feel rotten. It usually lasts 24 hours to a couple days and although you can be infected any time of year it is more prevalent in the late winter months, early spring. The key to prevention is to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Hand sanitizer does not kill norovirus or rotavirus.
If you do become sick, thankfully it doesn’t usually last too long. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids - it is best to stay away from sugary drinks - pedialyte or gatorade zero are some good options. The BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) diet has good food choices that should not upset your stomach more. Try to stay away from dairy, fiber, greasy food and spices. Your body is working hard to fight this virus so most importantly, you need rest.
Remember if you are not feeling well or your student isn’t feeling well, please stay home. You should keep your student home until they have been fever free without medication, and have not had any episodes of vomiting or diarrhea for at least 24 hours.

Reminder-mySAEBRS Information
South Lyon Community Schools will be administering the mySAEBRS screener to our secondary students in grades 6-12 later this month. We would like to share some information about the screener before it is administered at our middle and high schools.
The mySAEBRS screener is utilized as a tool to gather data at the district level to help South Lyon Community Schools understand what needs our students have and how we can best support them. The goal of utilizing this screener is to help design programming that best supports our students to be as successful as possible in school. Our current practices will continue for identifying and serving students with behavior, academic, and emotional needs, even with this additional data. Students will not be contacted about their individual answers on this screener.
This screener is not required for students at the secondary level, but will be given during the school day at each secondary building on a specified date. Information specific to your child’s building will be shared with you in each building’s Friday communication this week. As a parent/guardian, you are welcome to opt your child out of this screener by filling out an electronic form provided by your child’s building in their Friday communication. Additionally, on the day of the screening, students will not be forced to complete the screener and can opt-out themselves.
Information about mySAEBRS:
The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (mySAEBRS) is a 20 item rating scale that students complete about their social, academic, and emotional behaviors. It is grounded in a conceptual model which states that school success is predicated not just upon academic achievement, but also success within multiple inter-related behavioral domains. The mySAEBRS assessment is designed to evaluate student functioning in terms of overall general behavior (Total Behavior; 20 items), as well as Social Behavior (7 items), Academic Behavior (6 items), and Emotional Behavior (7 items).
Screening is the process of checking all students' performance (taking their "temperature") up to three times a year using mySAEBRS. Since this is our first year utilizing the SAEBRS and mySAEBRS screening tools, we will only have students complete the mySAEBRS screener once at the end of March 2022 this school year.
This year, mySAEBRS will be completed by students in grades 6 through 12. It is a 20-item rating scale that includes questions about a student's social, academic and emotional behaviors. The mySAEBRS is available in both English and Spanish for students. The student completes the scale online and it takes approximately 10 minutes to complete mySAEBRS.
Each mySAEBRS item has a score value from 0 through 3. These three scales (social, academic, and emotional) combine to represent a Total Behavior (20 items) scale. The online system (Fastbridge) reports a student's overall performance on each mySAEBRS scale as a sum of item scores within each scale.
Below is a list of the items in each scale. Students will use the following frequency indicators to identify how often they experience the described behaviors.
Never - Sometimes - Often - Almost Always

I get along with my peers.
