FAC Weekly Update

October 15, 2021

Good afternoon, Fine Arts Center Family

We hope you had a wonderful week! We have arrived at the end of the First Quarter of the school year. Ahead of us is a nice long weekend for our students, which is the perfect time for them to reflect on how they have done so far, celebrate their successes, and make some changes to areas that need improvement. We are all works in progress, and the best part about being an artist is knowing that the potential for growth always exists!

Here is the latest from the halls of the Fine Arts Center...

This Week's Student Leadership Lesson

The Human Voice, Breath, and Identity

"Our breath (and therefore our speech) is directly linked to our nervous system in a reciprocal relationship; a change in one affects the other. When we feel excited, anxious, afraid, or aggressive, our breathing quickens. When we feel relaxed, at ease, or settled, our breathing slows and deepens.

All of this holds particular significance for our training in mindful communication. When we understand the relationship between our breath, our words, and our mental-emotional state, we gain more mastery over our experience and self-expression."

Oren Jay Sofer - Say What You Mean; a Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication; page 18.

Fine Arts Center instructor and Peace Center friend Steve Watson is returning to the Genevieve's stage this month with a brand new project. Like many others, the jazz musician took the last year to reconnect with people near and far. The outcome? The Regions, a new group formed by old friends and classmates (all are University of Miami Frost Music School graduates). Their first release features original compositions from Ron Miller, Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies at University of Miami, in a reimagined format. Don't miss this evening of new arrangements, musicianship, creativity and groove with The Regions, who will be joined by Vee Popat (another UM graduate)!

This performance is part of the Peace Center's partnership with the Fine Arts Center. Prior to the show, The Regions will participate in a weeklong residency at the school, providing instruction and mentorship to students.

"Pink Martini" at the Peace Center

Our friends at the Peace Center would like to make our FAC Families aware of a fabulous concert opportunity - Pink Martini featuring China Forbes is coming to the Peace Center on Monday, November 1.

Part big band, part classical ensemble, part salsa troupe, and all fun, Pink Martini is the energetic and enthusiastic "little orchestra." Taking inspiration from cultures around the world, the group easily jumps between old-fashioned pop, jazz (mainly swing) and classical to establish its own unique blend of music. With a dozen musicians, a multilingual repertoire and an enthusiastic cult following, this is one eclectic sound you don't want to miss.

Get tickets today at peacecenter.org!

Congratulations to Carley Hitzelberger!

Digital Filmmaking student, Carley Hitzelberger, recently won the class’s viral video contest with 7800 views for a PSA she made about the dangers of texting and driving. Her PSA will be airing on WYFF next week.
