Updates from our APEIS, Jacqueline Chavez
“Official” Definition of Dyslexia “Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.” International Dyslexia Association, 2002

ATTENTION TEACHERS……
Math Intervention will meet Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays beginning on Wednesday, October 27th thru Friday, November 19th 2021. Classes will be an hour from 2:45 – 3:45pm. Our focus will be on NBT(Numbers and Operations in Base Ten) for grades 4th, 5th, and 6th. This intervention will be a total of 13 hours….11 hours of instruction and 2 hours for planning and report card grading. Class sizes will be from 6-8 students.
Ms. Chenu has uploaded the Pre-Assessment on Edulastic. We ask that all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers please administer the test and base your student selections on that data. Please reach out to us in Room # 6 if you have any questions.
Math Reminders from our Primary Promise Teacher-Katie Chenu
Hello Teachers,
Remember this Tuesday your grade level team should be working on your grade level number story that using the padlet platform found here: https://padlet.com/kiv8750/e4tg1ngnqory2s4g
Instructions are posted on the padlet. Please use this activity as a springboard for a math discussion with students next week. The following week, you will share any reflections or artifacts you have from teaching the number story. This can include videos, transcripts, student work or even a brief description of how it went. Please let me know if you have any questions when we meet this Tuesday.
Self Care Tips from our PSW-Denise Rodriguez
Notes from our STEAM Coach-Angela Muro
Hello all, I hope you had a great week! As I’ve popped into different classrooms either to demo a lesson or cover while the teacher is out, I’ve noticed many of you are using the pre-printed resources that are available in your Amplify tubs to build interactive bulletin boards. Kudos to you! I will be sharing some links and other resources to support your STEAM implementation. After looking at the data from the STEAM survey, we found that many of you would like to better understand phenomena and its role in our STEAM instructional units. I am sharing a link to a short (8 min.) You Tube video that explains how the NGSS is built around phenomena and sense-building. Please take some time to view this video if you can. Paul Anderson is a high-school science teacher and guru that has created several videos on anything NGSS. He has many videos on his You Tube Channel, Bozeman Science. Here is the link to the phenomena video: https://youtu.be/3ps3Js-psgo
As always, if you have any questions or need help, shoot me an email or come by Room 5.

DIBELS Progress Monitoring
In order to monitor the effectiveness of our strategies during Literacy Academy, we need to progress monitor our students. If students are showing progress, then our strategies/tasks are impacting their learning and we should continue to use them. If students are showing little to no progress, then we know that we have to change those strategies. We want to find the right strategies that will give us the most learning for our students. Our intensive students should be progressed monitored every two weeks. Our strategic students, every three weeks and our benchmark students should be progressed monitored every month. If you need assistance, please reach out to our Intervention Coordinators.
Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
I we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
Focus for Next Week
This week, we will continue to visit classrooms focusing on math. Our goal is to observe math discourse.
