If your child does not bring in a book, they will not be able to participate. Please let us know if you need assistance and we will try to help. Thank you for helping to make your child's school experience a memorable one.

Subtraction with Re-grouping

You may be asking, "Why do they teach subtraction that way? Can't we just go to straight to re-grouping..." Research shows that teaching students the basic algorithm has consequences as students advance into algebra and beyond. Students who don't understand the "why or what" they are doing in early grades tend to not have a strong number sense and struggle as the math gets harder. When students use manipulatives to build the numbers and show their regrouping this allows them to gain the concept in a concrete way. Next, the students move away from the manipulatives and do the work pictorially. The last step, abstract learning, takes place once the students have understanding of what it means to re-group and can move on to the basic algorithm.

Headphones

Many students are in need of new headphones. Check with your student for their current needs. I have heard these make great Christmas gifts or even a treat for good behavior from those pesky little elves. :)

*I have noticed that the headphones that have an "L" shaped jack rather than a straight jack last longer. I think it keeps the tiny wires from breaking inside. Here is a link to an example. (The bottom jack is "L" shaped vs. the straight jack on top.)
