Speech and Debate
On Saturday, October 7th the HRVHS Speech and Debate Team hosted an invitational novice competition. Along with Hood River’s own novice competitors, several other high school teams came to compete in the first tournament of the year. Congratulations to Jacob Kaplan for 1st Place in Prose and 2nd Place in Impromptu, Maggie Bertrand for 1st Place in Poetry, Maria Sandoval for 3rd Place in After Dinner Speaking, Claire Powell for 1st Place in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Lizbeth Carabantes-Martinez for 3rd Place in Prose, and Max Spears and Tabor Bergh for finaling in Impromptu. The HRVHS team’s next tournament is at Willamette University on October 20th.
Theatre Department
The Theatre department is quite busy with Fiddler on the Roof rehearsals (shows begin Oct 27th), collaborating with the amazing music department. The cast and crew have been invited to tour Portland Center Stage and then watch a performance of the Tony Award winning musical, "Fun Home." The tickets and the bus are provided by an anonymous benefactor in Portland. This will occur October 19th. On October 6th the Theatre 3/4 class was invited to attend the Oregon Arts Summit at the Portland Hilton. They will hear the playwright, Tony Kushner, deliver the keynote speech after which the students were invited to meet with Mr. Kushner in a private gathering for discussion about the arts as a career. Tony Kushner is is an American playwright and screenwriter. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993 for his play Angels in America. He co-authored with Eric Roth the screenplay for the 2005 film Munich, and he wrote the screenplay for the 2012 film Lincoln. Both movies were critically acclaimed, and he received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay. For his work, he received a National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013.

Global Citizens Club
The HRV Global Citizen's Club is traveling to Austria, Germany, and Switzerland summer of 2019! We are starting our enrollment early to give everyone as many opportunities as possible to earn the funds to travel. Take a look at our tour webpage for more information about where we're going and take advantage of the early enrollment discount of $200 off which expires Oct.6th and then becomes a $100 discount.
College/Military/Trade Fair
College/Trade/Military Fair is happening on Wednesday, November 8th from 10:00-12:00. More information about which representatives are attending will be in November’s parent newsletter and posted on flyers throughout the building.
