A Message from Executive Director Kevin Jauch
Thank you for taking time to see what’s new (which is just about everything!) at the North Cook Regional Office of Education (ROE #5)/North Cook Intermediate Service Center. You will notice that we use both names interchangeably, but we are one office functioning in both capacities to serve students, families, and the educators of Northern Cook County.
The word change best describes these last few months. A huge thank you to our retiring leadership team of Bruce Brown and Diane Betts for their years of guidance! Though the learning curve for our new Assistant Superintendent, April Jordan, and me has been steep, this transition has been both thrilling and invigorating. Much thanks to the other Illinois Regional Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents, as well as the folks at ISBE, who have been gracious with their time and patience, as April and I pepper them with questions and requests for guidance!
Over the summer, we moved into our new offices at 1001 E. Touhy Ave. in Des Plaines, which boasts brand new technology, a large comfortable professional development space and a smaller conference room (both available for rent), all conveniently located near O’Hare and easily accessible from I-90 and I-294. Just down the hall from my office is the North Cook Young Adult Academy (NCYAA), our regional safe schools program. It has been a pleasure getting to know the staff and students, and to see the school in action.
We may have new faces and a new location, but you can expect the same great service!
Kevin Jauch & April Jordan
welcome you to the new North Cook ISC!

AA-3000/3001/3002 will be offered here on January 31 and June 8, 2020.
New Licensure Specialist
We are pleased to announce that Izabela Kuczek has joined the North Cook ISC as our new Licensure Specialist.
Izabela worked for National Louis University (NLU) for the past four years as their Licensure Coordinator. In that capacity, she tracked, analyzed and processed students' applications for licensure, endorsement, and approval via entitlement in the State Board of Education’s ELIS data system.
Izabela’s optimism, disposition toward customer service, and knowledge of educational licensure make her a strong addition to our team. Prior to working at National Louis University, she was employed in the banking industry for over a decade. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from NLU. Please welcome Izabela Kuczek to North Cook ISC!

Fighting Youth Homelessness
Dr. Tom Bookler, McKinney-Vento Regional Liaison for the North Cook region, is part of a team that developed a grant targeting our students who are "unaccompanied" in our schools. The term "unaccompanied" covers youth who are not living with a parent or legal guardian. In many cases, these students have run away or been thrown out of their home. They may also have been left on their own by a parent or guardian, moved in with relatives or friends, or may be staying at a shelter, in a car, park or outdoors.
These are our most at-risk youth, and the grant specifically targets these students and young adults. The team that Dr. Bookler worked with in Suburban Cook County was recently awarded the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Grant through HUD for almost $6.1 million! They are in the process of bringing together community stakeholders and working on a strategic plan to make the vision of ending youth homelessness a reality. More information about this accomplishment is found at http://www.suburbancook.org. Kudos to Dr. Bookler (center, back row in photo) and the entire team!
CONGRATULATIONS National Blue Ribbon Schools!
We are proud to announce these recipients of the 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award from the North Cook ISC region:
Ivy Hill Elementary School - Arlington Heights School District 25
Maine South High School - Maine Township High School District 207
William Fremd High School - Township High School District 211
They are among 362 schools recognized by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos based on
their overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. These schools demonstrate that all students can achieve to high levels.
The 312 public and 50 private schools were recognized at an awards ceremony on
November 14 and 15, 2019.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. The National Blue Ribbon Schools flag gracing a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.
Lessons from Feed My Starving Children – by Makyla M., NCYAA Student
On Friday, November 15th, ten North Cook Young Adult Academy students and four staff members participated in a service learning opportunity at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) in Schaumburg, Illinois. Feed My Starving Children is a nonprofit organization that prepares formulated meals to undernourished children around the world.
My personal experience there was surreal and impactful. I not only was volunteering, but I also helped to feed children, which was a humbling experience. This opportunity has made me realize that I never had to suffer like some of the children around the world have and for that, I’m grateful. I was amazed after learning that the bags of food we had prepared and packed as a team would help to feed 106 kids for a year in Haiti. I wasn’t aware of the need for food in other countries until we arrived at Feed My Starving Children.
In addition to the service opportunity, our students and staff collected $160 prior to the event and donated it to FMSC on the day of the event. Volunteering at FMSC is a long-standing tradition that I hope continues at North Cook Young Adult Academy.
