I'm excited for this upcoming semester and the opportunity to work with you/your student to help him/her grow more proficient in the Spanish language, improve his/her cultural competence and global understanding!

Each week I will be sending a flyer (SMORE) to let you know what students are doing in Spanish 3 at NCVPS. I will share due dates and other important information. This past week (Week 1) we were working on the Getting Started Unit where students work on assignments and learn how to navigate through CANVAS. Please encourage your student to get started in the class as soon as possible. Students are expected to work in the class, Monday-Friday, for approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours.

This week (Week 2) we will be working on Unit 1, a review of Spanish 1 and 2. Here is the list of assignments for this past week and next week.

Parents and facilitators can now download the CanvasParent app in both the iTunes and Google Play stores.

Parents and facilitators will need student login information to set up their parent accounts. This will have to come from the school. NCVPS cannot supply login credentials to parents or facilitators. Check with your school's e-learning advisor (ELA).

The Canvas Parent app is designed to provide visibility into a student's progress at a glance. Canvas Parent allows both parents and facilitators to:

  • View assignment descriptions and due dates
  • Set reminders for assignments
  • View assignment grades
  • View course grades
  • Set grade alerts
  • View course announcements

Our course is formatted in a clear, list format, so that students can quickly and easily move from one item to the next, in the necessary order, as listed. The course is set up as conditional, so that students cannot move on to the next activity/assignment without completing the prior one first. If a student finishes his/her week's assignments early, he/she is encouraged to move forward and work ahead! Just make sure to complete *all* assignments, in order, and on time/early! Again, I recommend that students print out the schedule of assignments (see above) and check off assignments as they are completed.

Throughout the course, students will be responsible for attending one live class per unit (for a total of 10 live classes). Students will be given several options of sessions for each unit with a variety of teachers, so that he/she can choose which ones best fit his/her schedule. When students click on the assignment for the RLCs, they will find the calendar for all the RLCs. In addition, I include the calendar each day in my announcements.

Students need to make sure that he/she puts first and last name when entering the session. Attendance is taken for the session and there is an assignment to complete after attending the session. Each session lasts about an hour.

Students will attend a total of 10 sessions during the semester.

I strongly encourage students to attend the Required Live Classes (RLC), but if a student is unable to attend one of the Required Live Classes, I will include the link to my recorded RLC in my announcements after the last RLC is completed for the Unit.

Students are expected to attend the Required Live Classes throughout the course (at least one per unit/module), which is a virtual classroom environment that allows for complete interaction with the teacher and other students. As such, questions are often answered in these sessions. However, if/when a student needs additional help, he/she should first ask me, the teacher. If I'm not available and it's a quick question, he/should should take advantage of the NCVPS Peer Tutoring Center's Quick Questions. If more serious content tutoring/remediation is needed, the student/s can request one-on-one tutoring with me and/or a peer tutor. If a student is weary, nervous, and/or conscientious about taking the class online, he/she can request a Virtual Buddy from the NCVPS Peer Tutoring Center for moral support, technical assistance, and more. About me....

I am a retired public school teacher who loves teaching! I taught Spanish for 24 years in a public high school and 7 years as an English as a Second Language teacher, K-12. I have taught all ages, from kindergartners to senior citizens. I have also taught at a private school and 2 community colleges. I have an undergraduate degree and graduate certification in Spanish. I am certified to teach ESL for K-12 and have an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. In addition, I have National Board Certification for teachers. I have approximately 40 years of teaching experience! Besides teaching Spanish, traveling is my passion. I have traveled to 30 countries and have visited 14 of the 20 Spanish speaking countries. My picture to the left is at the Panama Canal. My bucket list is to travel to all of the Spanish speaking countries and I just traveled to Cuba this past Christmas. I used to chaperone students to Europe, working for a travel company in the summer and have been to Spain more than 50 times. In addition I lived and studied in Spain when I was in college. I love helping students learn and pushing them to reach their potential! I am proud to say that several of my former students have gone on to study Spanish and are Spanish teachers or working in an field where they use Spanish on a daily basis in their jobs.
