A Message from Principal Nixon--Week of October 5, 2020
Dear Northwoods Families,
As many of you already know, a lot has changed over the last couple of weeks! Last week's School Board meeting provided us with a firm reopening timeline, and we are diligently preparing for the return of students. However, there is much more work to do and many more changes to come between now and October 26th.With that in mind, I've included for you the most recent information and updates we've been provided. I will continue to send out updates and reminders between now and October 26th as that information becomes available.
Please take a few minutes to read through the information below. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Our school is committed to the academic achievement and behavioral health of all students and has established a process to build a partnership between the family and the school in order to best support individual students. We offer individual or small group sessions to support students as needed.
During remote learning, we obtain parent/guardian permission to hold google meet sessions for individual and groups of students. The purpose of these meets is to support academic and social emotional well being of students in school.
Activities will include: Addressing non-confidential issues with students, such as organization skills, managing stress, managing their time effectively, making good decisions when engaging in screen time, maintaining physical activity and making sure their basic needs are met through individual, small group, and whole group lessons.
You can fill out our virtual mailbox form to let us know your child needs to speak with their school counselor or you can book a meeting with us at https://nescounselor.youcanbook.me/.
You can choose to decline for your child to receive individual or group counseling via email or calling us by phone.

Important School Information
Plan B Phase In
The WCPSS Board of Education voted last week to have all Plan B students in Pre-K through 3rd grade, along with K-12 students participating in regional special education programs, return to the classroom on a rotating basis beginning October 26th before attending class on a daily basis beginning November 16th. Students in grades 4 and 5 will return to school in three-week rotations beginning November 16th and will continue on rotations until the end of the semester. Please be advised that these decisions DO NOT impact students who are currently enrolled in the Virtual Academy. Students enrolled in the VA will continue to receive online instruction only.
Plan B families will receive information regarding student cohort assignments and rotation schedules this Wednesday, October 7th via School Messenger. If scheduling conflicts between siblings occur, please send that information to our Data Manager, Marilee Davies, at email@example.com.
Online Learning Schedule Changes
The return of students means that we need to make slight changes to our current Online Learning schedule to ensure alignment with our face-to-face schedule. Expected changes are being reviewed by our school leadership team and will be shared with families once the revised schedule has been finalized. All anticipated changes will take effect on October 26th.
Before-School & After-School Care
Before-school and after-school care will be available to Plan B families, beginning October 26th. Please see the details below.
- Before-School Care: The before-school care program will be offered onsite from 7:00AM - 8:45AM. Participating students will be required to pass a daily health screening (screenings conducted by staff) before entering the building. Positions in the Before-School Care program may be limited due to availability of staff and social distancing occupancy limits. More information about the program, including pricing, will be sent out once that information has been released by the district.
- After-School Care: After-school care will be available for Plan B students beginning October 26th and will be provided onsite by the Taylor Family YMCA. Available positions within the After-School Care program may be limited due to availability of staffing and social distancing occupancy limits. Sign-up information will be posted on the Taylor Family YMCA by October 12th. If you have questions about the after-school care program, please contact the program coordinator, Dana Kennedy, at Dana.firstname.lastname@example.org or 919-653-2385.
Curbside Material Distribution
We will be distributing Q2 student materials on Thursday, October 15th and Friday, October 16th. All families, regardless of whether your child participates in VA or Plan B, should plan to pick up materials on one of those two days. Please see the flyer below for more information.
In accordance with WCPSS guidelines, we have updated our schedule to include a remote learning day on Wednesday, October 7th and Wednesday, October 14th. Northwoods Elementary students will not receive live instruction on those two days. Instead, teachers will prepare asynchronous activities that students may complete throughout the day. Attendance will be taken via a simple assignment in Google Classroom.
Spirit Week (October 12th - 16th)
Next week is Spirit Week!! Please see the flyer below for more information.
Student Supplies--Parents of Plan B students should begin purchasing the materials posted on our Student Supply Lists. If your family is experiencing financial difficulty and needs support with obtaining school supplies, please contact us at 919-460-3491. We have approximately 80 student backpacks filled with school supplies that are available to families in need.
PTA Business Sponsorships
Each year, our PTA sells business sponsorships to help fund t-shirts for ALL of our students and staff at Northwoods. The shirts have become a wonderful tradition at Northwoods, helping to foster a sense of community and school spirit…not to mention helping teachers easily identify Northwoods students during field trips! With so many of our events and traditions on hold or cancelled, we felt that the shirts would be especially important this year as a symbol of community and spirit as we work from home. If you or someone you know would like to be a business sponsor, head over to our MemberHub store. You can take a look at our smaller sponsorships levels (starting at just $50 this year) or become a PTA member for the year all in one spot!
