What we've been up to.
- In Math we have begun exploring measurement with both standard and non standard units. We found that our mystery plant is now about a foot and half tall. We have also learned about the many sizes of different types of penguins and look at maps to learn where penguins live.
- We have begun our study of nonfiction books. We've started reading books about penguins, gathering facts and learning about nonfiction text features. We will begin using this information to create fact books about penguins in writer's workshop.
- As part of our nonfiction study, our question of the day has focused on OPINION questions to clarify the difference between fact and opinion. Students have responded to the question, "Which is better?" given the following choices: winter or spring (spring won), playing inside or playing outside (outside won), and TV or books (TV. Landslide.)
- Each author wrapped up their All About Me book by adding on a page of personal fun facts (oooh, nonfiction text feature!).
- We learned about President Washington, President Lincoln, quarters and pennies. We also explored and discovered different ways to make 25, one of which was counting by fives.
- We played the penny toss game with our third grade reading buddies.

The things kids say. For real.
Trying to reteach the strategy of grouping objects as we count, so we do not have to recount entire collections when we lose track...
Mrs. Cohen: What if Veer was counting and someone put their ear in his armpit and he laughed so much he had to start all over?
Students: (Laughing.... just laughing. But they learned some math too. After they finished laughing.)
So, yeah, sorry if they are telling armpit jokes now at home. And thanks to Veer for being a great sport.
