First Grade First graders are working on their personal safety unit. They are finding out the Safety Steps to follow if someone tries to break the Touching Rule. They will finish this soon and begin working on careers.
Second Graders Second grade has just finished learning about conflict resolution/problem solving. They are currently doing lessons on friendship and respect.
First Grade: So far this year we have learned the rhythms of the quarter note (ta), eighth note pairs (ti-ti) and a quarter rest. We also know the pitches so and mi and are currently learning the pitch above so which is la. We just learned the song “Lucy Locket” which has these 3 pitches (So, La, and Mi). We have enjoyed playing the hot/cold game with this song. A student hides Lucy’s “pocket” and another student gets to search for it. The class gives clues by singing quietly or loudly, depending on how close the finder is to the pocket.
Second Grade: The students have learned about the music staff. We played the game Line/Space Bingo. We learned that it has 5 lines and 4 spaces and this is where music notes “live”. Last fall we reviewed so, la and mi pitches that we learned in first grade. Recently, we learned mi, re, do which will complete the pentatonic scale. We are now preparing to share our music at the second grade music sharing on Friday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. We hope you all can join us!
First Grade: 1st grade students continue to demonstrate enjoyment of physical activity as well as improvement of skills and coordination. Garner students are working hard to stay active and put forth a great effort in whatever activity or unit is taking place. Some of the units we have completed over the last few months are bouncing and dribbling skills, cup stacking to work on hand-eye coordination, bowling/rolling skills, and nutrition/fitness activities. Along with positive interactions, showing respect and kindness to others continues to be reinforced. Some future units that Garner students will be participating in are parachute activities, jump roping and jumping activities, climbing wall, water safety, tumbling/body management skills, tennis/volley skills, and outdoor leisure games.
2nd Grade: 2nd grade students continue to demonstrate enjoyment of physical activity as well as improvement of skills and coordination. First grade spent several weeks comparing and contrasting different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We are just beginning a research unit on U.S. symbols that will continue for the next few weeks. The VR headsets will be back next week so we will also spend some time exploring with this awesome technology!
Second grade spent several weeks comparing and contrasting many versions of Little Red Riding Hood from all over the world. We are now working on creating "Wanted" posters for fairy tale characters to finish up this unit. The VR headsets will be back next week so we will also spend some time exploring with this awesome technology!
