Jonestown Elementary Newsletter

October 2019

Dear Vikings!

I know we are all surprised by how fast September has flown by! We have had a fantastic month here…it’s been busy, but the progress students have made in just a few short weeks has been amazing! By now, everyone is settling into their new classrooms, new routines, and getting down to the business of learning. This year has so much in store, and we are excited to promote student growth.

Finally, don't forget to check out the upcoming events and dates below. This Friday will be our BOO Bash and the PTO has another great event planned for our students and families. I look forward to seeing many families Friday night!

Kindergarten Parents/Guardians: Please remember that Physical exams and Dental exams are required for students entering a Public School in the first year they begin attending school. Those exams are due to me by December 20, 2019 unless you indicated you wanted the exams completed by the school physician/dentist.

3rd Grade Parents/Guardians: Please remember 3rd grade students are required to submit a Dental exam by December 20, 2019 unless you indicated you want the exam done by the school dentist.

ALL Parents/Guardians: Please remember if weather permits (real feel temperature is above 20 degrees) students are outside for recess and they should have weather appropriate outerwear ex. hats, gloves, and coats. It is also important that they have adequate footwear; heeled, backless, or flip flops are not appropriate for playing outside at recess and can cause injuries. Thank you for helping us keep your students safe.

Cross Country Race

The Northern Lebanon Elementary Cross Country Race was held on September 25th at the High School. There were 125 participants grades 1-5 from all four elementary schools that signed up to compete. This was significantly higher than last year’s total of only 75. All of the runners did a fantastic job, but in the end, Jonestown finished first with a final score of 156, Fredricksburg 121, East Hanover 116 and Lickdale 111. Winners for Jonestown were Sophia Roye for the 3rd Grade girls and Mason Moyer for the 2nd Grade boys.

Mrs. Herman's Guidance Class

This past month in Guidance Class students learned about the role of the school guidance counselor, respect, and developing school readiness skills. October will focus on responsibility, making healthy choices, and identify and coping with feelings. October 21st – 25th is Red Ribbon Week. Students are encouraged to participate in our spirit week and celebrate being drug free.

As we approach our 5th week of lessons classes are working towards earning their 5th shine point, meaning, their next Guidance Class will be a reward day. Reward days will consist of a choice of playing a game, watching an educational video, and/or coloring a picture.

Apple Day

First grade made applesauce in the classroom on Johnny Appleseed’s Birthday. They cut up the apples, then washed them and added them to our pot. We then added sugar, cinnamon, and water. While watching them cook, we took turns stirring and mashing. The smell was amazing but tasted even better! Everyone gave 2 thumbs up.

Car Rider Reminders

To ensure the car rider line is most efficient in the morning, please pull up all the way up along the curb. If your child requires help exiting the vehicle, please pull into a parking space and walk your child up to the building.

If you do not have a car tag visible at 3:20 dismissal, you will be asked to park and sign your child out in the office. NO exceptions will be made.

Please do not park in Handicapped Reserved spots unless you have a Handicapped tag.

STEAM in 2nd Grade!

2nd graders worked hard to complete a family STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) project for the month of September. Students were challenged to create something useful from nature. The turnout was astounding! Projects included a birdhouse, scarecrow, bird feeder, compost bin, and many, many more!
