Growing Gains
This week, a group of teachers and myself started working on an NWEA pilot project looking at the importance of student growth goal setting with assessments.
This blog post makes a great connection between looking at setting growth goals and "Dancing with Stars". https://www.nwea.org/blog/2018/what-dancing-with-the-stars-teaches-us-about-balancing-growth-and-proficiency/
We don't expect anyone, student or adult, to be extremely proficient at a task the first time it is done. Think about learning how to tie shoes or riding a bike. This definitely takes a lot of encouragement, determination, persistence, and positive thinking. We should approach student growth on assessments with the same zeal as we would if we were encouraging students to ride a bike or tie their shoes. Having the "I know you can do this" mentality encourages students with hope for growth.
There are several teachers in this building that celebrate growth on these assessments in their classes. Many students are rewarded with pizza parties, movie nights, extra recess time, classroom treats, notes sent home, and other opportunities to be noticed.
This week, I encourage you to think about how you help students grow in your classroom and how you encourage growth.
