Take a PEAK
September 23, 2013
Welcome to PEAK
What a great start to the school year! We spent some time getting acquainted with the building by going on a quick tour. The students met the nurse, the office secretaries, and the librarian. Then we organized binders and got acquainted with the location of supplies in the room by completing a scavenger hunt.
Theme Study
Last week students were challenged to create an invention that would improve the school day. They received a bag of materials to make their creations--what a creative bunch they are!! This week students watched a slideshow about inventions from long ago. The students had to guess what the invention could be, before the answer was revealed. I also read a couple of stories from a book called "Mistakes That Worked". Ask them about how chocolate chip cookies were invented! Yum!!
PGD (Personal Growth and Development)
Students responded to the following writing prompt in their journal:
"I am in PEAK because . . . . ". This was a great springboard for discussion. We also talked about how to talk to classmates about PEAK, and how to return to the regular classroom at the end of the day. Piper gave a great demonstration about what it should look like, and the whole class wanted to participate in showing what it should NOT look like. The lesson ended with lots of giggles and laughter!
Activity Centers
Math
Students are progressing nicely through Set 1 problems.
Topic Study
