Today the NBA is the top professional league in the world in terms of popularity, salary, and level of competition. Professional teams appeared by the late 1890's and high school students, both boys and girls organized their own league for competition.


High school play has become particularly intense, in certain regions of the country, such as Indiana and Kentucky, where the game took precedence in the sporting culture as it fostered communal pride and identity. Adolph Rupp, who played under Phog Allen also coached many of the talented teams at Kentucky in that decade.
