A Peek Into Our Week

Bio

My name is Shannon Carlson and I am so excited to be your child's teacher in the 4/5 loop! This is my 5th year of teaching and my 2nd in Royal Oak.

I have been married to my highschool sweetheart for almost 3 years! We enjoy spending time at our family cottage in the UP and spending time with our twin nieces Molly & Emma, and our nephew Liam.

This Week

We've had such a fun week of learning and continuing to get to know each other!

  • My classroom library checking out system was opened to students. Students are able to check out books and take them home in the evenings or over the weekend! Students also worked on weekly book shopping to keep their book bags full of new books!

  • Students finished taking the fall NWEA tests!

  • Students completed a spelling inventory. This will help to place students in differentiated spelling groups. This year, spelling is completed in homerooms. Spelling tests are bi-weekly and will begin in the next 2 weeks!

  • In Math we began our Math Unit on Place Value. Students practiced reading and writing numbers, in standard form, expanded form and word form. Students also began rounding numbers up to the millions.

Vocabulary to review:

  1. Place Value
  2. Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions
  3. Standard form
  4. expanded form

  • In Reading we worked on making connections. While students are reading, they deepen their understanding with them make connections. There are 4 types of connections that students can make while reading.

  1. Text to Self: While reading a book we make a connection to our lives and experiences.
  2. Text to text: While reading a book we make a connection to another book we've read.
  3. Text to world: While reading a book we make a connection to things that we've learned, read, or saw around the world or in the news.
  4. Text to media: While reading a book we make a connection to a song, movie, tv show etc.
