Celebrating Computer Science Education Week December 3-9
What is Hour of Code?
With 71% of STEM jobs in computing and only 8% of college graduates majoring in computer science, New Jersey must provide opportunities for educating our children. Computer science helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity, all important skills for many of the jobs of today and jobs that will be available in the future. There are 21,235 computing jobs in New Jersey. Delran students can lead the way! DHS offers both CP Computer Science and AP Computer Science and all K-8 students have computer skill development in their cycle courses.
Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.
Hour of Code Activities @Delran High School
All Freshmen will participate in online Hour of Code tutorials during their Freshman Seminar class during the week of December 3-7.
Seniors interested in participating can request a pass to the Media Center during lunch or study hall periods during the week.
MakerBot demonstrations will take place in the cafeteria during all lunch periods on Monday, December 3.
Hour of Code Activities @Delran Middle School
Students currently scheduled in a cycle class with Mr. Brody or Mrs. Csapo have additional Hour of Code activities during that class.
Hour of Code Activities @Delran Intermediate School
All homeroom teachers have the opportunity to sign out a Chromebook cart and have their class participate in additional online Hour of Code tutorials throughout the week.
Hour of Code Activities @Millbridge
- In Library, kindergartners will complete unplugged activities by "coding" a sequence of dance moves related to the book "Spunky Little Monkey." First and second graders will complete online coding activities and view "bot" demonstrations.
- In PE, students practice spatial thinking, design and engineering skills by building structures with Imagination Playground.
In Art, students create glyphs and transformed numerical sequence data determined by dice rolls into artistic representations.
In Music, students create musical compositions using instruments, made of assorted tubes at various lengths/widths. Students also experiment with musical coding on Scratch, Jr.
In addition, 2nd grade teachers have the opportunity to sign out a Chromebook cart and have their class participate in one of the Hour of Code tutorials geared for younger elementary students.
