Announcements
Thank you for all of the lovely valentines cards and treats! My family and I have been enjoying all the goodies this weekend!
I hope you enjoyed the 4-day weekend! We have a busy short week ahead of us!
Due to all the colds going around LCM, we are out of Kleenex! If you happen to be at a store over the next few days and wouldn't mind donating a box or two of Kleenex to the classroom, we would really appreciate it!
Academic Updates
Math
This week, we will be working on developing our understanding of fractions as division. Please look for ways to reinforce this important concept at home. For example, if there are 3 brownies and 4 people want to share them, each person would get 3/4 of a brownie. If there were 4 brownies and 3 people wanted to share them, each person would get 1 1/3 (or 4/3) brownies. Fractions ARE division, where the numerator represents the number of things being divided (for example, the brownies in my examples above) and the denominator represents the number of people/groups sharing those things (in my example, the people.)
Language Arts
We are in our 2nd week of ELA Unit 6. This unit has a fiction focus and all texts we read will address the essential question, "What compels people to survive?" Last week, we read a fable by Aesop and an excerpt from a play called "Brushfire" that address the theme of survival. We are also in the middle of a novel study of a book called The Girl Who Owned a City.
Social Studies
We are taking a short break from Social Studies to focus on Science. If your child has not yet passed All 50 States & Capitals, please continue to have them study/practice. The next States & Capitals quiz will be given NEXT Friday, March 1.
Science
We are in the middle of our owl pellet dissections. This is a fascinating lab that explores body systems (skeletal, digestive), as well as food chains and ecosystems. Your students are doing a fantastic job removing bones from their pellets. Many students will begin laying out and reconstructing the skeletons this week! Completed projects will be on display during Open House at the end of March.
