Spain Park High School 03/13/20
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
I feel compelled to give you an update on the COVID-19 situation as it applies to the Spain Park Community and our school. Our school and system leaders are monitoring this very fluid situation constantly. You may have read Dr. Muprhy’s latest communication updating us on the Hoover City School’s plan of action:
Effective immediately, HCS students will not participate in any athletic, academic or extracurricular events out of state, nor host a team or club coming in from out of state, nor participate in an in-state event if out of state participants are involved. We will not participate in any events with a large crowd, defined as 500 or more. Unfortunately, this means that the Finley Awards Program scheduled for this upcoming Thursday evening, March 19, has been canceled. As we approach Spring Break, March 23-27, I encourage all of us to be thoughtful about travel. Visiting certain areas (all of which cannot be defined at this time) could result in isolation or quarantine.
The Spain Park Faculty, Staff, and Administration are in the process of making preparations to deliver instruction to our students in the event that we have a school closing. I want you to know that our thoughtful planning is centered around the best interests of our student’s education in the short and long terms. We feel confident that should the need arise for us to provide this alternate form of instruction that we can deliver the appropriate level of instruction. Also, our custodial staff has increased the depth of cleaning and will continue this significant part of our school’s environment. I would encourage you to frequent our Hoover City Schools Website to be aware of the rapidly changing situation. It has been my experience, over the many years, that a calm, reasonable, and fact-based approach, not only lessens our student’s fears but also keeps the focus on solving the problem.
Please, take a moment and review the wonderful things happening in our school and the great achievements of our students. We still have one week before the scheduled Spring Break, and it is our hope that you and your students stay healthy as we make our way towards the break.
As always, I am available to hear your feedback on how we can make SPHS a great place to be.
Respectfully,
Peter L. Giangrosso

Softball Wins!
Spain Park continued its hot start to the softball season, winning its own Jaguar Classic tournament on Saturday in Birmingham-area spring sports action.
The Jaguars (16-0) downed defending Class 7A state champion Hewitt-Trussville 5-3 for the tournament title.
It's the second-best start in school history for Spain Park, which won 22 straight to start the 2017 season with Hewitt-Trussville ending the winning streak.
Spain Park scored all five of its runs against Hewitt-Trussville in the second inning on the strength of a pair of home runs. Lindsay Parker belted a leadoff homer and Maggie Daniel blasted a two-run shot before Annabelle Widra added an RBI single and Lydia Coleman stroked an RBI triple.
Ella Reed (9-0) earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits in four innings and striking out three with four walks.
Widra has a 6-0 pitching record and leads the Jaguars with seven of their 20 home runs this season along with a .486 average, 17 RBIs and a team best 23 runs.
Alexis Anderson leads the team with a .571 average and 23 RBIs.
Spain Park won seven games last week, including six straight games to capture the title. The Jags beat Mountain Brook 20-0 in regular season play then beat Alma Bryant 9-2, Calera 12-0, Hueytown 7-2, Tuscaloosa County 8-1 and Sumiton Christian 17-1 before downing Hewitt-Trussville for the championship.

Teen Tech Hackathon hosted by Tech Birmingham & TEALS
This past Saturday 16 SPHS students participated in the Teen Tech Hackathon hosted by Tech Birmingham & TEALS at Samford University. These students made up 4 teams who worked for 14 hours total on designing an improvement for public safety. They programmed hardware components to operate based on their innovative designs. Fueled by plenty of snacks and caffeine, they surprisingly kept a great attitude the entire time they worked and had an absolute blast!
Please congratulate all the following students on representing SPHS so well at this city-wide event!
SPHS Team A: Amaar Ebrahim, Will McCrite, Marus Mudano, Adam Harkins
SPHS Team B: (1st place winners) Zane Peacock, John Wilson, Daniel Li, Advaith Vadlakonda
SPHS Team C: William Baker, Andrew Hunter, Alex Laney, Julian Rodriguez
