Dear Blair Families,

I hope that you and your family are well. We have had a very busy first quarter of school, but I am so glad that we are learning in person this year. It’s been great to see staff and students engaging in classrooms, athletics, and many school activities. Staff and students showed their school spirit on Costume Day this year, see the staff photos below.


We have completed the first marking period and report cards will be distributed on Friday, November 12. Please check your teens' grades and celebrate their achievement or meet with your teen's counselor to collaborate on a plan for improvement. We will celebrate KINDNESS WEEK during the week of November 22 - 24. We look forward to supporting our students and staff. Kindness is powerful. It is also contagious. We all know the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. On the dates below we are encouraging our Blair families, students, staff, and community stakeholders to share a positive note of gratitude. Let’s pay kindness forward, send an email to a staff member, make a card, or tweet a positive quote or comment. #KindnessMatters every day.

During Kindness Week, we will be giving students personal care items. If you would like to donate new cheerful masks, chapsticks, unscented lotions, coats, socks, gloves, scarves, hats, and blankets, please drop them off in the main office for our Kindness Corner.

3. JOIN OUR NOVEMBER 16, VIRTUAL PTSA MEETING

Diversity and Inclusion

In the midst of the ongoing national debate about how to properly educate about racism and bias in schools, Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery Blair High School clearly and emphatically commit to teaching students about all facets of our nation's history.


MCPS recently released a statement regarding the Critical Race Theory debate that explained 'While Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) does not teach students the established legal theoretical framework known as Critical Race Theory, our school system does not shy away from its longstanding commitment to providing students with the tools to explore the evolution of our nation, its institutions, and policies through a lens that accurately reflects the experience of all communities and cultures.


Blair's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals align with this mandate and we strive to increasingly provide guidance for our teachers to proficiently address such issues in the classroom. This month, staff received professional development on the proper instructional use of racial epithets and marginalizing language in the classroom.

Class of 2022 News

Exciting news for the Class of 2022! All graduates will wear red gowns with a white custom MBHS stole. Seniors should have received a cap and gown order form in their English class; the form is also available outside of the attendance office, or online here. Student cap and gown information can also be entered via this Google Form.

Payments can be made via cash or check (made out to MBHS), or online at Blair’s Online School Payments page. If you pay online, please have your student bring in the order form with their height and weight, or complete the Google Form. The deadline is December 10, 2021!

Advanced Placement Exam

Registration for AP Exams closes this week. Please check your student’s account at myap.collegeboard.orgto make sure they are registered for the appropriate exams. If any exam registrations need to be added or cancelled, have your student e-mail me at Leslie_V_Blaha@mcpsmd.org by Thursday, November 11.

If your student is registered to take an exam, payments are due Friday, November 12. If an exam is not paid for by this date, the exam registration is still active. A financial obligation will be placed on your student’s account.

Child Development: Blair’s Preschool Program

Are you, or someone you know looking for a preschool program for your 4-year-old?


Welcome to the Montgomery Blair High School Preschool Child Development program!

The Blair Pre-K program focuses on all four types of development; Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Social, and language development of its students as well as pre-emergent writing, reading, math, science, and social studies skills. Under the supervision of the Child Development Teacher, high school students plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons.


As preschoolers and high schoolers work together, they learn from each other.

We begin our program on November 1st and are open Monday through Thursday-- 7:50 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.The price of the program is $600 for the school year. We will accept applications even after November 1st. We ask that your child is fully toilet trained as we are not permitted to change diapers or pull-ups. Accidents do happen, so a change of clothes is necessary.

We are back in the swing of things here in the media center. During student free times, such as before school, during lunch, and after school, we are getting to know some of your children and are very happy to see so many students enjoying what we have to offer! Blair's Media Center is also the proud sponsor of Blair's chapter of Project LIT @Blair, a book club + service organization. We are kicking off a book drive this month, collecting new + gently used (no stains or tears) kids, teen, and adult books (fiction, nonfiction, comics, etc. -- but no textbooks/study guides please) at the media center.


In December, we will host a lunchtime book swap for students to pick up a free book for themselves or a loved one leading up to winter break. Whatever is left over will be sorted + donated to an area Title I elementary school (kid books) and TBD charitable organization (adult books).

We are delighted to report that our Frida Kahlo Exhibit during the week of October 11 to 15 was very well attended by a wide variety of classes. In all, we had just over 1900 attendees (what?)! These exhibits take considerable planning and funding. The media center staff worked withMs. Melissa Young and the Latinx Leaders Association (LLA), sponsored by Ms. Maria Tanos. The LLA students stayed after school on an early dismissal day to help install the exhibit. It was such a treat to have their help! We were also fortunate to be awarded a PTSA MiniGrant to fund the rental of the artwork for the exhibit. Blair PTSA, we appreciate YOU and enrichment you provide for students at Blair.

Blazer Community,

Playoffs have been happening and are still ongoing for the fall 2021 season. Here is an end-of-season review for our fall sports teams.


Field Hockey is the 1 seed in 4A South 2 so host throughout the regional play. They had two byes last week and had their third-round game hosting Wheaton which they won 9-0. They host Einstein on 11/3 for the Regional Championship. The head coach is Megan Lusby and the JV coach is Leyla Balimtas.


Boys Soccer was the 3 seed in 4A North 2 going to Blake on 11/1. They were upset by Blake in Penalty Kicks, 4-2. Congratulations to Coaches Haigh, Coyle, and Wiggins on a terrific season!


Girls Soccer is the 1 seed in 4A North 2 and beat Blake on Friday night. They are headed to the Regional championship on Tuesday hosting Sherwood at 6 pm. The winner advances to the state quarterfinals, TBD.


Football got a big win on Friday night securing the 2 seed in 4A North (placed above Laurel by only 2 points). We are hosting Bladensburg for the first round of playoffs on Friday, November 5 at 6:30 pm. This is a historic season for football, being the number 2 seed and hosting a playoff game.


Volleyball ended up getting the 3 seed in 4A North 2 so have one home game this Thursday with a 5:30 pm start time, against Paint Branch.


Cross Country is in 4A North had their county championships on Monday 11/1 and both boys and girls placed in the top ten of the county. Alexa Avila and Indy Lyness were our top runners, placing 5th and 2nd respectively. Cross Country will have their Regional meet (Thursday) at Dulaney HS. The head coach is Angie Bosse and the assistant is Anna Bosse.

Cheer came in second place in the county championships! They did a nice job. Proud of the Cheer team and their coaches DeFilippo and Bloom!


Team Handball lost in the first round of playoffs. Blair was one of five teams in the county. The team was coached by Nicholas Losekamp.


Logan Stillerman placed 22nd in the state for Golf last week. Golf is coached by Dan Oliver.

Poms will continue supporting the fall teams. Their county championships are on February 5, 2022. Poms' coaches are Makeyda Soriano and Kassandra Saravia.


All JV teams are finished with many of the JV players being brought up to varsity for playoffs.

A HUGE shout out to the Booster Club that supports ALL Blair sports teams, sports teams’ team parents, and many individual parents who have stepped up this fall to sell apparel, work concessions, and support ongoing efforts.


The 2nd Annual Turkey Trot is planned for November 20, 2021. This is a community engagement event that is meant to bring our community together through a brisk fall run and support all of our teams. Information will be out very soon! Look for ways to sponsor the event as a whole, support individual student-athletes and teams and be a part of a day of fun running!


Winter Athletics start on November 15th for almost all teams except swim and dive and bocce. Check Blairblazersathletics.com for winter registration information and tryout times and dates.

In order to participate in winter (and spring) sports, a student must be vaccinated, complete a medical clearance once per calendar year and complete the online registration through their ParentVUE account (Information found here). A student must have a valid medical clearance (SR-8) form (only form accepted) with the Covid supplement. Students should complete their pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) so that the medical eligibility form and COVID pre-participation form (last two pages of SR-8) are ready for online submission or submission to the athletic director before tryouts/practices. Physicals are valid for one calendar year. Physicals can be uploaded by the parent during the registration process. However, if a parent needs to submit a physical after the student has already been registered, email an electronic copy of the pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) to Blair Athletic Director, Rita J. Boulé.


Student-Athlete Vaccination Requirements: Beginning Monday, Nov. 15, the start of the winter sports season, all high school and eligible middle school student-athletes will be required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to participation. This requirement applies to the winter and spring sports seasons, as well as all out-of-season activities conducted through MCPS Athletics. Return to R.A.I.S.E. Plan Operations The Return to R.A.I.S.E. Plan will continue to drive program operations regarding COVID-19 procedures and protocols. The plan is reviewed on an ongoing basis by the COVID-19 Task Force for MCPS Athletics. The latest version is always available on the COVID-19 Athletics Information webpage.

Where is My Teen?

We receive many calls and visits from parents looking for their teens after school. Here are a few safety tips for parents:


1. Speak with your teen about their after-school plans. School dismisses at 2:30 p.m. for students who have 8 class periods, and 3:20 p.m. for students with 9 class periods. After school, students must be under the direct supervision of a staff member or participating in a school-sponsored activity to remain in the building.


2. Make sure your teen has their cell phone charged and turned on after school and is checking phone messages.


3. Cell phones have a locator function, have your teen turn it on so that you can know their location.


4. Students without cell phones, can come to the main office to call their family or ask a staff member for assistance. Our main office is open until 3:50 p.m. daily.

A Safe Place For Teens After School? Blair After School Recreation Program: REC ZONE IS BACK!

Montgomery Blair High School in partnership with Montgomery County Recreation Department offers FREE after-school recreation program, Monday - Friday • 2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., in Blair's cafeteria. The program began on Monday, September 13, 2021. Students can still register for the program and attend on the same day. This program is open to all students. In addition, free dinner is available too.
