Community Newsletter: Kicking off our #BestYearYet
What a Week!
Week Seven is in the books! It was a VERY busy and VERY elite week at BCMS!
We had home tennis, football, softball, Title 1 Information night, a pep assembly, and a DANCE! Don't worry if you weren't able to come to the dance because of athletics....our NEXT Homecoming Dance will be the Friday in the week of Homecoming! Stay tuned for more details!
I was exceptionally proud of the behavior of all our scholars all week! They truly demonstrated the #BeBCMS PBIS expectations in everything they did! #ProudPrincipal
One new practice that we want to begin is setting a cut-off time for student check out. We are asking that parents and families do not sign out or pick up their children after 3:00. It is very difficult for us to manage the end of the day business and find students that close to dismissal. We realize sometimes this is unavoidable, but we ask that you do your best to honor this! Call the front office with questions!
Please make sure that you are signed up for my REMIND, as well as the grade level REMINDS so you don't miss a beat! We are about to get into the busy time of fall with school pictures, games, dances, and activities at school! You definitely want to be in the know at #BeBCMS!
Say Cheese, Tennis!

Map Testing continues
Scholars will be using their ELA MAP Reading RIT Score to set goals for themselves in WIN time on Monday! Please look for MAP reports to come home as soon as we wrap up testing.
MAP testing is a great way for our scholars to show how much they have grown and an awesome way for us as teachers to use this data in our planning and lesson designs. MAP tests are designed to measure growth over time, so that makes them very different than our "state tests" known as Georgia Milestones. MAP tests give you tons of great information in regards to achievement at this moment. Here is a great article to read that will give you more information in regards to MAP testing.

We will test our scholars three times a year in the areas of Reading, Math, and Language Usage. These scores will help us determine growth, mastery, lesson designs, and class choices. We will send home reports with scholars once we have concluded the testing.
Notes from Ms. Raeburn
Here we go again! Week Eight and my favorite day of the week! We had such a busy week last week, I am excited to get into each classroom everyday! Last week, my Cookie Chats featured all scholars who were new to BCMS! It was an awesome time to talk about what makes BCMS ELITE and what are some things we need to work on!
I have had lots of great parent conversations about our grades and progress reports. I have put together some information that you may find helpful as you read your child's progress report. There are still 2 full weeks left before the end of the quarter. Make sure you are asking your child questions regarding what they are doing in classes (the answer is NEVER nothing!) and please email me and the teacher if you have questions!
Read below for more detailed information on our grades:
What is the purpose of grading?
To provide feedback to improve student and teacher performance
What is a summative assessment?
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Examples of summative assessments include:
a midterm exam
a final project
a paper
a senior recital
Information from summative assessments can be used formatively when students or faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.
If you have questions about your child's progress report, please contact the teacher of the class. If you still have questions, I will be happy to sit down and walk you through our PowerSchool reports. If you need PowerSchool access, please come up and see Miss Shelby and she will help you!
Thank you for being proactive and for supporting our school and our passion work! I am proud to be your principal and would love to hear from you! If you have a concern or a comment, please do not hesitate to email or call me: eraeburn@bryan.k12.ga.us or 912-626-5050 or 912.255.0630.
