Global Read Aloud Day and Black History Month Celebrated at BRMS

On February 5th, BRMS celebrated Global Read Aloud Day with a poem that homeroom teachers read to their students. The verse, entitled "The Undefeated" by Kwame Alexander, marked another significant event, the beginning of Black History Month which occurs each February.

Global Read Aloud Day is a worldwide event celebrated in over 173 countries. It reminds us of the power of words and the importance of story telling. Black History Month commemorates and celebrates the contributions to our nation by Americans of African descent. The featured poet, Kwame Alexander, says about his poem, "So much of American history has been left out of textbooks, and that to truly know who we are as a country, we have to accept and embrace all of our woes and wonders." Essentially, the poem reminds us to never give up.
