Principal's Note
Thank you Mary Collins Families for a fantastic start to an exciting new year. I know there have been many changes, but I find the hope and energy around moving forward is positive and exhilarating.
A few reminders this week: Important forms were sent home with students for parent review and signature. The household income form and free or reduced lunch application need to be completed and returned next week to your students teacher to ensure full funding to our program. Even if you feel you will not qualify or do not wish to participate in the free or reduced lunch program, by completing the form, the school will be assured much needed funding by just participating in the application process. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Also, If you have not already logged into the Aeries Parent Portal and completed your data confirmation, you can complete this task in the library. See April for technical support if needed.
Aeries Data Confirmation
Petaluma City School’s 2018-19 Aeries Data Confirmation is now open and should be completed by Friday, July 27. Laptops are available in the Library so you can set up your parent portal and complete data confirmation.
When completing the Data Confirmation, be sure to complete the My Schools Apps application so that your student can take advantage of the PCS district’s Student Nutrition Services (SNS). The district department responsible for providing school meals, is asking all families to fill out the meal application, even those who know they won’t qualify based on family income. Please click on the following link to fill out the My School Apps application. At the top of the application you can select the language you prefer (English or Spanish). SNS has annual expenses of about $2 million. Their main source of income is from federal and state reimbursements for breakfasts and lunches served to students who qualify for free and reduced price meals. Without a meal application on file, SNS cannot receive the full government reimbursement for those meals. Petaluma City Schools receives an additional amount (approx. 20%) of the base funding per ADA for all students who qualify for free and/or reduced lunches. This represents a significant amount of funding for the District and our schools and the funding is received regardless of whether the students actually are served the meals. For more information please see Petaluma City Schools website Thank you for supporting your school.

Notes from the Office
ATTENDANCE
707-778-4741
When students are regularly late or absent from school, it has a negative impact on their learning. We encourage parents to help their children be punctual and to avoid unnecessary absences. Please call the attendance line in the morning each day your student is absent.
- Absences: The state reimburses schools only for actual days of attendance. Absences may be excused only for illness, medical/dental appointments or death in the immediate family & religious observances. We keep track of unexcused absences to help us determine truancy issues. Parents of a child who has more than three unexcused absences will receive an official warning. If attendance does not improve after the third letter, parents may be referred to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) to work out a program with various school and support agencies to insure the child gets to school on time.
- Excessive absences due to illness: If a child is absent 14 or more days for illness, parents will receive written notification that a doctor’s note must be submitted to the school to explain the absence and describe the expectations for attendance in the future.
- Tardy: Please be conscientious about helping your children get to school on time. Teachers start their classes with instruction for the morning lessons. Students who do not receive this information play catch-up all day. Being prompt is an important characteristic that serves students well in junior high, high school and in the world of work. Good habits start early.
- Absences from school for a family vacation: We can arrange an Independent Study Contract for work to approximate what will be covered in class. This contract must be signed in advance by all parties (student, parent, teacher). You must give the teacher a minimum two-weeks' notice to prepare a packet. The expectation is the student will complete 4 hours of work each day. The work is submitted to the teacher upon student returning to school. The contract can be signed and submitted for our attendance audit. Students who do not complete an independent study contract will be marked unexcused and considered truant by state law. We recommend all families take advantage of our 45-15 schedule and plan their vacations during our regular break times in order not to miss school.

Want to Get More Involved at School?
Did you know there are 3 separate groups that help support Mary Collins School?
They are:
- The Educational Foundation (can pay salaries + more) Co-Chairs Amy Cohen (amycohen339@gmail.com) and Megan Malone (meg@maloneweb.com). Think: Environmental education, music program, Spanish and middle school electives.
- The PTA (supports non-salary needs on campus) President Jen Stoneman,(jenstoneman@juno.com). Think: Classroom Supplies, Mentor Reading, Field Trips.
- Friends of Cherry Valley Library (supports the library) President Sonia Pai, (spai3@yahoo.com). Think: Librarian's Salary, Library Books, Technology.
These three groups hold community events, coordinate fundraisers, write grants and work tirelessly, all for the benefit of our children. Click here for a one page description of these three organizations.
It would be so wonderful to see some new faces working with each of these organizations. Don't be shy! You don't have to jump in as President! We are looking for brainstormers, worker bees, and helping us plan for the future. Email one of the presidents above and get involved today!
