Family Update - August 19th, 2020

Good morning Stanwood Middle School Families!

We are very excited to get our school year started. We know that we will not start the year in a typical way and that this can be stressful for all of us. Ms. Christmas and I have created a couple of videos to help start the year and also included lots of information to get ready.

We can't wait to get started on this new adventure and appreciate everyone's patience as we navigate these new times!

New Mural at SMS!

Molly Seyler, who attended SMS from 1997 to 2000, contacted Mr. Klundt in early June about the possibility of repainting the mural to the right of our entry way. Molly is now an Art Teacher at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. She originally helped paint the mural with other students when she was a student here.

Molly visits often and has peaked through the doors when visiting to see her work from many years ago and wanted to help us update the wall. She spent many hours over the past 7 weeks painting the new mural (pictured below). She finished this week and it looks fantastic!

Thank you for giving back to SMS Molly!!

Weekly Schedule for Students

Please see the schedule below for what the schedule will look like for a middle school student once we start school.

Students will attend periods 1, 3, & 5 on Mondays and Thursdays as well as periods 2, 4, & 6 on Tuesdays and Fridays (schedule with times shown below).

During these class times, teachers may be instructing students and/or be showing a pre-recorded video along with classroom discussions & activities.

On Wednesdays, students will have the opportunity to check in with their teachers during student hours set up by individual teachers.

Once we've finalized schedules, directions will be emailed in how to log into Skyward Family Access to view as well as invites to join all Google Classrooms will be sent out. More information to come soon in our weekly updates.

While things will definitely look different this fall, we will be connecting with each student in different ways beyond the six classes students have.

•We will have a daily check-in and morning announcements for each class.

•We will have Wednesday class meetings for large group advisory lessons and celebrations.

•We will offer clubs once the school year starts.

•We will (fingers crossed) offer sports starting in January.

Weekly Overview Template

Within Google Classroom, teachers will share a template that outlines what students will be working on for the week and how to access resources. This includes learning targets, student hours to contact teachers, and how that contact should be made.

An example of the template is pictured below.

Google Classroom

We will be using this platform for all learning materials and communication. Teachers will have a consistent organization method so all classrooms will have assignments posted in the same location within Google Classroom.

Below is an example of a classroom set up. We will have students join a Google Classroom as well as invite parents/guardians to get weekly updates.

Student Schedules

We are working very hard to get student schedules to the point where we can share them with all families. We are still working on our teaching schedule and verifying which students are returning to us and those who are not. We hope to open these very soon!

What can we do to prepare for the first day of school?

If your student has a cell phone, there are apps that can help keep them organized at their finger tips. There are directions below regarding adding email, Google Meet, as well as Google Classroom apps to your smartphone. It is okay if you, as a parent, want to add these to your phone for alerts on behalf of your student as well (if they do not have a device or you'd like the same updates).

It is important, when adding these apps, that students are using their school email address. These are their computer log - in with as ending.

We are trying to limit the number of people in our building at this time so we appreciate you calling or emailing instead of stopping by in person.
