Feb. 13-17 Newsletter
Valentine's Day brought excitement to our campus this week - we appreciate all who showed some love to the York staff and to our students! It's wonderful seeing student friendships grow as our time together progresses. We came from many campuses and backgrounds, but our inaugural year has unified us as Admirals!
This week our final group of 7th graders attended the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center to participate in the Marine Population Dynamics lessons and fishing. It was a great experience and the SYCC staff was impressed with our students as we got many compliments over the 4 days we had groups with them.
Our 6th and 7th graders did an amazing job in this year's math bowl! We had 4 teams representing 7th grade and 8 teams representing 6th grade. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Garrison, Mr. Cooper, and Mrs. Casey for sponsoring these teams and providing opportunities for all our Admirals!
1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade had a treat this week with a visit from author and illustrator, Jonathan Miller. He showed his art and talked about the process to create his work. Students were able to ask questions and purchase signed copies of his books. If your student didn't purchase a copy, they can check them out in the Media Center as the school purchased a set for the students to enjoy!
The Safety Patrols enjoyed a "Patrol Fun Day" event after school on Monday for a movie, pizza, and snacks. Our 5th grade leaders enjoyed relaxing with one another and many said they are already looking forward to the next event. We are proud of all the ways they help out around campus!
The kindergarten classes visited the Glazer Children's Museum today! It was a day of exploration, imagination and discovery.

Admiral on Deck: Mrs. Oakes
Hi! My name is Lauren Oakes. I teach 5th grade reading, writing and social studies at York. I have been teaching in Hillsborough County for 16 years. I am a proud graduate from the University of South Florida. I have absolutely loved having the opportunity to open this beautiful new school. When I'm not teaching, I love reading on my front porch with a good cup of coffee. I also love being with my family; my wonderful husband and 3 wonderful daughters, Marin in 6th grade, Annabelle in 3rd grade, and Charlotte who will be starting VPK in the fall. As a family, we love boating, cheering on our soccer player (Marin), and our horseback rider (Annabelle). We also love being involved in Girl Scouts.
