Creative Writing

What is my child doing this half-term?

Within their English lessons this half-term, students will turn to their creative writing skills and focus on improving their ability to vary their sentence structures and vocabulary for particular effect. They will be assessed on this as part of their GCSE English Language Paper 1 Section B at the end of Year 11. A practice of this question will also be their assessment task which will be completed in lessons before the Easter holidays.

The skills which they will be focusing on are as follows:

- Use of appropriate register/tone to engage target audience

- Use of extensive and ambitious vocabulary as part of writing

- Organisation of writing through use of relevant discourse marks

- Accurate use of complex punctuation

- Accurate spelling of high and low frequency words

As ever, if you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch,

How can I help my child at home?

- Encourage your child to visit the websites in the Key Vocabulary section above and spend some time working through the units and trying the activities to help them.

- Check that your child is completing their English homework to a high standard. It is set every Monday and should be written clearly in their planner along with the deadline that has been set. Ask them what their task it and make sure they have an appropriate place to complete the homework.
