A Message from the Assistant Principal

Due to the growth in the number of students at the 8th grade level, we have had to make changes to student schedules. Some students may have even been placed on different teams. This means also that we have no room for movement in second semester Connections classes and cannot at this time honor limited changes as we have done in the past.

Please know that we are committed to helping all of our students who are moved to new classes acclimmate to their new classmates and teachers.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Principal Dionne Johnson at dionne.johnson@gcpsk12.org.

Language Arts

Happy New Year! 8th grade ELA will start 2nd semester with Unit 4: The Fight for Freedom. In this unit, we will focus on both literary and informational texts that center around the theme of freedom. We will also continue building our vocabulary knowledge and grammar skills.

8th Grade Formal

Hello Shiloh 8th Grade Family,

The 8th grade formal will be held on Saturday, April 22 6pm-9pm. The theme for this year will be Hollywood Nights

The cost for the formal will be $65 and can be paid on My Payments Plus starting the week of January 17th. We look forward to seeing the students dressed in their “Hollywood” best.

GUIDE Speaker for 8th Graders

8th graders at Shiloh Middle are honored to have the Associate Executive Director of GUIDE speak to them in their classes during the week of January 17th.

GUIDE’s mission is to improve community conditions by utilizing collaborations, promoting positive youth development, delivering specialized training and resources, and preventing substance use and abuse.

GUIDE was formed in 1986 as a joint effort between the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and the Gwinnett County Board of Education. They wanted to have a comprehensive, coordinated, and proactive approach to reducing and preventing substance use and abuse.

Preparing for High School

In just a few short months our 8th graders will be preparing to enter high school. It is hard to believe that this school year will be coming to an end soon. There are several steps we will need to take to prepare our rising ninth grade students for that next step:

Class Performance: It is essential that students are working up to their potential in all classes each day. The 8th grade core and connection classes are directly aligned to support the classes students will participate in next year. If your child is struggling in a class, reach out to his/her teachers immediately for support. Students must pass five out of six classes each semester. Two of the five classes must be language arts and math. If your child failed to pass a class in the first semester, you will receive Academic Assistance Program information.

Carnegie Credits: Current 8th students are in the process of earning Carnegie Credits. These credits contribute to the total number of units needed to graduate from high school. In order to claim the credit, parents must sign the appropriate documentation that will be shared with all families in late April. Students who attain an 85 average or higher for the courses listed below are eligible for Carnegie Credits.

  • Accelerated Algebra I

  • Foreign Language (Spanish I and French I)

  • Introduction to Business and Technology

  • Introduction to Digital Technology

The Counseling Department will host a College and Career Fair this semester. Please contact your grade level counselor if you would like to participate or volunteer.

Meet the Shiloh Middle School Counseling Department

Why Middle School Counselors?

Middle school students are characterized by their rapid physical growth, curiosity about their world, and an emerging self-identity. Middle school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents, and the community to create a safe, respectful learning environment whereby young adolescents can maximize personal and academic achievement.

Middle school counselors enhance the learning process and promote academic, career and social/emotional development. School counseling programs are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set informed career goals, and realize full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community.

Medical Authorization

A parent or guardian must bring any / all medications to the school and fill out a medication administration form. Students are not allowed to carry any medications with them at school or on the bus. This includes any over the counter medication, for example; cough drops, Tylenol, etc. If you would like your child to have any OTC medication left in the clinic, you must bring to school with a completed medical authorization form.

To give us authorization to give your student their medication you will need to complete the Medication Authorization Form. You may print it, complete it, and bring it in or you can pick one up to complete in the clinic. A separate form is required for each individual medication.

If your student requires an inhaler and/or an Epi-pen you will need to complete the appropriate form.

For your student to be permitted to carry their inhaler and/or Epi-pen on their person, their physician will need to complete the section of our form advising us of their authorization. If the student will be carrying their inhaler and/or Epi-pen on their person, we ask that you also provide the clinic with a backup in case one is needed.

Inclement Weather Procedures

As we enter the winter season, it is important to know what to expect from GCPS in case of inclement weather. If weather conditions pose a potential safety concern, the decision to cancel school or delay opening might be made.

It is more likely for school to be canceled in the early morning — due to dangerous road conditions that formed overnight — than for school to let out early because bad weather is moving in.

If bad weather causes school to be canceled or dismissed early, public announcements will be made on GCPS TV, on the school system’s website (www.gcpsk12.org), on Twitter and Facebook, through SchoolMessenger calls and optional texts, and via metro-Atlanta radio and television stations. Full-day cancellations usually are announced by 6 a.m.

GCPS TV can be found on the following Gwinnett County cable channels:

  • Charter - Channel 180

  • Comcast - Channel 24 or 26 (depending on location)

  • Visit us on our GCPS TV app on Apple, Android, Amazon Fire, and Roku devices or view the live stream at GCPSTV.org

You can access current or potential weather hazards for north and central Georgia here.
