Solar Energy
Solar power is conversion of the sun’s energy to usable power (electricity). Mostly the common source of solar power utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity. Photovoltaics use a semiconductor to take in radiation from the sun, when the semiconductor takes in the radiation it emits electrons which are used as electricity.
Facts
- Solar energy is a resource that is not only sustainable for energy consumption, it is indefinitely renewable (at least until the sun runs out in billions of years). Solar power can be used to generate electricity, it is also used in relatively simple technology to heat water (solar water heaters).
- Though it’s most commonly used as an alternative source of electricity, solar energy also has other important applications. Known as “The People’s Power” since everyone on Earth has free access to solar radiation, it can be used to bring energy to populations that have no access to a local power grid. It’s also commonly used to power many types of equipment in space that cannot easily be refueled or have its batteries replaced as well as for distilling water in areas of Africa where populations don’t have access to clean, drinkable water.
- Solar technologies can be separated into two categories; active solar and passive solar, depending on the way they harness, convert and use the solar energy.
