Mrs. Sharkey's Class News

Important Updates and Information

Mrs. Avery

Hello Forest Glen Families! My name is Mrs. Avery and I will be the long-term substitute teacher during Mrs. Sharkey's maternity leave. I have been a substitute teacher in the Howard Suamico School District for the past 4 years, and have also been a parent volunteer within the district. I am excited to be at Forest Glen and look forward to working together with you and your child over the next few months. If you have any questions or would like to contact me, feel free to send an email to annaver@hssd.k12.wi.us.

Thank You!

What We're Learning

Literacy

In Reader's Workshop, we have been focusing on reading informational texts and listing the main idea and key details. Our theme this week was hibernation, and how different animals prepare for the winter months.

Please remind your child to bring their "Book Bag" back to school each day. We will be using these books during our guided reading groups. Thank you!

Please be sure your child reads their sight word book to you during the week. Students will earn a Timbertail Token for returning the book with 3 signatures! This book will become part of their read to self book box.

Word of the Week: for

Writing

In Writer's Workshop, we have been focusing on continuing to develop and write narrative stories. Students are working hard to hear all the sounds in words, so that other people can read their stories. We are also focusing on telling the story across our fingers - telling what happens first, next and last in our stories. Next week we will focus on learning to talk through our pictures to help tell the who, what and where of our stories.

Math

Our focus this week has been on reviewing adding and subtracting within 5, working with a

5- group and comparing numbers using the equal and not equal signs. We have also been reviewing the concept of sorting and classifying items based on size, shape, color and other similar attributes.

Content

This week we started our new unit on force and motion. The concepts we covered this week include:

  • a force puts an object in motion.
  • a force is a push or a pull on an object.
  • 4 types of motion: circular, straight, zig zag and vibration.

Next week we will use materials to conduct experiments with each type of motion.

Other

Please be sure to send a winter coat, gloves or mittens and a hat with your child to school everyday! It would also be helpful to have these items labeled with your child's name. If possible, please send all winter gear in a sturdy bag with handles.

A BIG thank you goes out to Mr. Montgomery for visiting the Kindergarten students on Friday to talk about his job as a Packers coach. We have been learning about communities and community helpers, so this was a great experience for the children! Mr. Montgomery shared lots of great information, and the kids had many questions to ask as well.

Schedules and Class Calendar

January Class Calendar.

The calendar has students listed who may bring one item for show and tell on Fridays. I will rotate through 4 students every Friday that we have a full day of school. Please make sure you are comfortable sending the item to school. Please label the item with the student's name. Thank you!

The calendar also has a student listed on Monday as the, "Star of the Week." I will send home the forms that need to be completed and brought back to school on the Monday that the student is assigned, "Star of the Week."

January Lunch Menu

Our class will be taking a field trip to Barkhausen on January 19th. Mrs. Sharkey's class will be attending the field trip with Mrs. Adams class. There will be limited space on the bus. We are asking that parents who are planning to join us for the field trip, to either follow the bus from Forest Glen, or meet us at Barkhausen at 9:00 a.m. We will be eating cold lunches upon our return, so please remember to pack a cold lunch for you child on Tuesday, January 19th. Thank You!!

Birthdays

As your child's birthday approaches, please contact me if you are interested in sending a treat to school.

If your child has a summer birthday, please contact me to let me know when you would like to celebrate and I will check to see if that day works for us!

Snack

Please send a healthy afternoon snack to school with your child each day.

Please send crackers/pretzels that we may use as a classroom snack in the morning. Thank you!

Gym Shoes

Please remember to send shoes for gym class. We have gym on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Pick Up Routines

If your pick up routine changes (either permanently or just for the day), please email myself annaver@hssd.k12.wi.us and include kim.ness@hssd.k12.wi.us. This way, if I am absent, the sub will know as well. Thank you!
