School Choice process for Cherry Creek
Cherry Creek School District is implementing a NEW School Choice application system and updated policies. The new application system will be used for all choice applications, including Non-Resident and Intra-District Transfer requests.
Parents will be able to submit a School Choice application for the 2023-2024 school year starting January 1, 2023. This date applies for residents and non-residents of the school district and the first lottery run in early February for district residents, non-resident employees’ children and for students that are currently enrolled as a non-resident or on a 1 year Intra-District transfer. All other applications will be included in bi-weekly lottery runs starting in February. Students who are accepted to a choice school will be accepted to the highest grade level at that school provided they meet the continued enrollment criteria.
Additional details about School Choice and the continued enrollment criteria can be found in the School Choice Transfers section of the Admissions website:

Get ready for Cherry Creek Reads, a districtwide celebration of reading, coming March 13-17!
The theme for the week is “Read Together, Dream Together” and is based on the book, Someone Builds the Dream , by acclaimed author Lisa Wheeler and bestselling illustrator Loren Long. It's an engaging nonfiction narrative that reminds us not only should we dream for the stars, but we should also pay tribute to those around us who work tirelessly to make sure we succeed!
Access all resources at this landing page for Cherry Creek Reads 2023! We have a copy of the book in each classroom at the school.

Spring picture day information, online ordering, and our customer advocate team are all at your fingertips. Visit http://mydorian.com, search for our school, and click on the green "Order" button or the yellow "Help" button associated with our spring picture day.
Here are some helpful tips to make picture day great!
- Schedule haircuts 7-10 days prior to picture day!
- Wear simple clothing. Solid shirts or small patterns along with sleeves, photograph best. A simple collared shirt is a timeless classic.

Dear Sagebrush Families,
Spring State Assessment Administration
Beginning this spring, the Cherry Creek School District will administer the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) English Language Arts and Math tests for students in grades 3-8. Additionally, the CMAS Science tests will be administered to students in grades 5, 8 and 11.
The test windows for Sagebrush Elementary will be April 3rd-April 21st
For students in grades 9-11, the Colorado PSAT 9, PSAT 10 and 11th grade SAT assessments will be administered on April 12.
Purpose and Value of State Assessments
CMAS and PSAT/SAT are the only common assessment for Colorado students that measure real-world skills like problem-solving and critical thinking. Because the assessments are aligned to the college and career readiness standards that are taught in our classrooms, teachers do not have to “teach to the test.” Instead, good instruction based on the standards will be the best preparation for students.
In the Cherry Creek School District, results from the state assessments are combined with local assessments and other student information to create a full picture of your student’s learning experience in our schools. This helps parents and educators answer important questions such as:
● Did your student meet the expectations at their grade level to be on track for the next level of learning?
● Does your student need additional services and/or support?
● How well did your student perform compared to other students across the state?
● How well did your school do overall in meeting performance and growth goals throughout the year?
To ensure your student has the best experience on test day, please make sure your student is well-rested and has a good breakfast.
For more information about state testing in Colorado, click HERE.
Parent Exemptions
While state testing provides valuable information about your student’s academic achievement and growth, Colorado statute does allow parents to exempt their students from testing without consequences to the student, school, or district. If you plan to exempt your student from state testing, please login to your my.cherrycreekschools.org parent portal and click on the “State Assessment Exemption” tile.
Sincerely,
Christopher Powell

Art Update
In January, 3-5th grades completed their first independent project. They got to make the choice of whether they would create a work of art that was either 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional. What they came up with was an amazing assortment of work that was unique and inventive. Many of these pieces will be displayed in our art show scheduled in May.
Our second project will begin at the end of March. In the primary grades, students are learning about line, color, texture, and the process of building. They continue to work on skills that are not only helpful in the creative process, but also that they can take back to the classroom.
The care and pride that kids put into their work is astounding! Watching Sagebrush kids create only solidifies my belief that every kid can be an artist.
During the months of February and March, all students spent their time creating artwork about Space. Kids used pastel chalk to create nebulas, ceramic clay to produce scenes from outer space, toothbrushes to make stars, and cardboard to build rockets. They have been engaged with the creative process and are producing some amazing art work.
Be looking for information about our Art Show. I am targeting the second week of May and Sagebrush artists will be displaying all sorts of fun and creative projects from this year.

Physical Education Update
Students have been working on their jump rope skills and learning a new activity called Cardio drumming.
The drumming unit has been very fun and energizing for every student. Every student has drumsticks, and they are able to drum to the beat of the music while engaging in different types of exercises including jumping jacks, squats, sit ups, and lunges.
The students have been leading their own groups while drumming which has been fun to watch. The students are creating their own dance moves that really helps their group stay engaged throughout the entire song.
For the jump rope portion of our unit, the students have been working on collecting different Ninja Belts while jumping. In order to receive one of the Ninja Belts, you have to jump rope a certain number of times consecutively.
Many students have earned multiple belts including a brown and black belt which consists of completing 75-125 jumps in a row.
The students have grown so much during this unit that it is exciting to think about what the next few weeks of school will look like.
Thanks!
Colleen Brewer
