The Cold War

  • Cold War was a period of rapid technological advancement due to the high tensions between the Democratic US and the Communist USSR
  • No fighting actually took place, but there was a lot of espionage
  • The construction of the Berlin wall was one of the key marks of the Cold War; West was controlled by the US (western ideologies), east was USSR (communist ideologies)
  • Containment is the idea that Communism would continue to spread
  • Eisenhower Doctrine - a country could request economic assistance if it is threatened by Communism

  • Switched political parties, from Democrat to Republican
  • Ideology of "McCarthyism"; public accusations of people in power being or being associated with Communists
  • Defamed after a TV interview

The Desegregation of the South

  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954) - the Supreme Court ruled that school segregation was unconstitutional because it violated the 14th Amendment
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott - Was a civil rights protest designed to use the African-American community's economic power to end racial segregation on Montgomery city buses after Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to relinquish her seat to a white man
  • Little Rock Crisis - Eisenhower ordered federal troops to protect African American children at a public school
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957 - ensured African Americans' right to vote

  • War breaks out between North (Communism) and South (Western)

The Space Race

  • One of the results of the Cold War
  • USSR and the US try to race to get people into space/the moon
  • USSR leads with the launch of the Sputnik, and eventually gets a man into space before the US
  • Eisenhower begins a campaign to spur on the public spirit, creates NASA and gets major support for space exploration
  • The US lands two people on the moon in the Apollo 11 mission, which ends the space race
