The official e-newsletter of Corona Elementary
May 5, 2022
Dear Parents,
We have made it to the final stretch of the 2021-2022 school year, and I am so proud of what we have accomplished together this school year. We have overcome a multitude of challenges and uncertainty, but we persevered by believing and trusting each other. I have to admit that there were a few times this school year where the pressures and demands had me worried and stressed. But seeing the tenacity of our staff, students and parents continually gave me hope that would we again defeat another challenge. Stay connected and engaged as we close the year out and prepare for a successful start to the 2022-2023 school year! Together we are better... Go Corona!

Principal, Corona Elementary
Corona Night @Quakes Game
It was a fun baseball night out for Corona families and friends on April 28th. Mia Ravelo, Ms. Elena's daughter, started off the night throwing the ceremonial first pitch. Ms. Brenda wowed all those in attendance with her singing of the National Anthem. There were also on-field games for our students, a Bachelorette contest, as well as catching of hot dogs. Tremor’s dance moves got the crowd going (no dance-off with Dr. Flores, maybe next year?) and the Quakes came back from being down to win 5-2. Thank you PTO for putting on the event, everyone that attended, and purchased and/or donated tickets to support our school :)

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Celebrate our School Lunch Heroes!
Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.
On Friday, May 6, 2022, we will celebrate the 10th Annual School Lunch Hero Day! School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria.
School Lunch Hero Day provides you with the perfect opportunity to recognize the hardworking professionals in your school cafeterias.

Ms. Melinda Summers Sandoval
School & Family Outreach Assistant
Hello, My name is Melinda Summers Sandoval but most people call me Mindy. I began working at Corona Elementary School in January of this school year. I grew up in a small town in San Luis Obispo County which is about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. I have been married going on 18 years this June. My husband, Tomas, has a great sense of humor and makes me laugh every day. We have 3 children who keep us super busy and I spend most of my free time cheering them on at their swim meets, soccer matches, concerts, and theater productions.
I grew up in a family who prioritized community involvement. For the past 10 years I have volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader, Room Parent, Soccer Coach, Soccer Referee, Team Parent, and Costume Designer/Creator for a local youth theater group. The thing that I enjoy doing just for me is running. I have run 9 full marathons and several half marathons.
I attended San Bernardino Valley College and transferred to California State University, Fullerton where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1997. I then moved back to San Luis Obispo County and worked in various programs that provide support and guidance to at-risk youth. I earned an MSW ( Master of Social Work) from San Jose State University in 2004. The majority of my adult life I have worked and volunteered in programs that prioritize the well being of children and their families.
I am currently the School Family Outreach Assistant here at Corona Elementary School which means that I get to work with students, parents, teachers, and staff to promote student and family well being and student success. I like the welcoming and positive environment that greets the students each day at Corona Elementary. I enjoy working in a school that goes above and beyond to create an inclusive community where each student is supported to reach their full potential. Mostly, the kindness and dedication of the Corona Elementary students, families, and staff is inspiring, and I feel fortunate to come to work here every day.

RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING: Reflecting and Ethical Responsibility
During the month of May, your child’s SEL instruction will dive deeper into Responsible Decision-Making learning how to evaluate and reflect on current situations while taking ethical responsibility for choices. Students will understand how to be realistic in their evaluation of consequences of various actions, and to be considerate of the well-being of oneself and others.
