#MakeADifferenceMonday
Tune in every Monday for #MakeADifferenceMonday where we will feature a stakeholder, student, or fellow alumni answering "Five questions for B-C-S"
This week B-C-S is featuring, RC Water's 2nd Grade teacher, Ashlee Hathaway!
1. What college did you attend, did you participate in any sports in college?
~I attended The University of Findlay for my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. I also played softball all four years--pitched and played third base.
2. How long have you been teaching 2nd Grade at RC Waters?
~This is my 13th year teaching at RC Waters. I started as an Intervention Specialist for 7 years (grades 3-5), then made the switch to 2nd grade.
3. What procedure do you use for discipline, and what do you expect from your second grade
students in terms of behavior.
~Here at RC Waters, we use PBIS. I reward my students for good behavior throughout the day, using Class Dojo. They earn points and they are able to use them to purchase items off of our Dojo prize cart. In terms of behavior expectations, I feel that they are old enough to know the expectations in the classroom and around the school and hold them to it. We have focused a lot on reviewing classroom and school rules as a building that they have daily reminders of what is expected of them. In the elementary, I believe that it's not only our jobs to teach curriculum, but to teach them how to be good person, as well. I focus on kindness and how we accept and treat others. The students have done a great job with this and I've noticed a huge difference in their actions. Many of them go out of their way to give compliments or to help others in and outside of class.
4. Other than teaching, what else have you been involved with at B-C-S Local School District?
~I coached softball for the first 7 years of teaching. I began as a volunteer, became an assistant, then head coach for 2 years. I was a member of the Athletic Boosters. I also enjoy attending events here at B-C-S to watch past students in activities they are involved with as they go through middle and high school.
5. What do you enjoy doing during the summer months with your family?
~I love all the time we spend together in the summer! We have Cedar Point passes and love to go swimming at my parents' house. We get together with friends and their kids for lots of play dates! The park is close to our house, so we like to ride our bikes there to play. Anything to get us outside! My husband and I are big sports fans, so we enjoy going to the Mudhens and Indians games. This summer we'll be going to the Outer Banks with friends and their kids, so we're really looking forward to that!

Students Win Big at Annual 7th Grade School Bucks Auction
Students at OHMS were required to keep a ledger and monitor their income and spending. They were able to bid on items like gift cards to various local businesses, drinks, blankets, TV's, drones, video games, and much more. OHMS Principal Laramie Spurlock Commented: "This is a great event for our students. They really look forward to it every year. The seventh grade staff puts a tremendous amount of work in to this event each year in order to make it a positive learning experience for the kids. They really do a wonderful job making the seventh grade a year that the students will always remember. This event would not be possible without the very generous donations from our local businesses and parents."
Below are three students who purchased items. Andrew Berlin was able to bid and win a Rockets trash can, Karson Lajti won a drone, and Brandyn Schee was able to win a remote control car. Every student at the event had an opportunity to go home with a prize.

8th Grade STEM program at Oak Harbor High School received funding from Genoa Bank for the purchase of two new 3D printers
Staci McDaniels, Marketing Manager at Genoa Bank, helped to secure the donation. In the past, Genoa Bank has graciously funded prize money for a semester long project. This year, however, Mr. Zajac thought it best to invest in 3D printers, for which Genoa Bank was fully on board.
“In talking with the 7th grade STEM teacher, 3D printers are making a significant impact in today’s world,” says Zajac. “I opted to modify my semester project, and the natural progression was to incorporate 3D printing.”
Zajac hopes to continue evolving the curriculum to better incorporate the new printers. Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools is excited about Genoa Bank’s continued support of education.
