Colts,
Recently I had three amazing students set up an appointment with me to discuss their thoughts on creating a student-led newsletter. Our Colts came in well prepared and blew me away with a professional looking Google Site presentation that has all the key components of a fantastic student voice newsletter. The newsletter will release once a month at the end of the month. The first edition comes out on the 31st of this month for our student body. I was, and still am, so impressed with the presentation and product that Lola O'Leary, Aliza Tharani, Ellis Wesley, and the Colt Chronicle team have produced thus far and are finalizing. I am thrilled to hear from our students that they feel comfortable presenting ideas that will contribute to their overall experience at school. This is just another way that our Colts are using their strengths and showing that student voice is alive and well at CMS.

8TH GRADE FOUR YEAR PLANNING (ALSO GOOD FUTURE INFO. FOR ALL)
The counselors sent out communication through Skyward on Friday, September 28th about Four Year Planning and Endorsements. If you did not receive this communication, or you have questions, please contact your student's counselor. Last week the 8th Grade English teachers presented a video from the counseling department about 4 year planning (see link below). In the coming weeks, counselors will be meeting with every 8th grade student individually to start a four year plan and choose an endorsement. These individual meetings will go through the end of the 1st semester. Remember, this plan is a working document in Skyward that can be changed this year and in high school. Plus, when the high school counselors come to visit with our students in the 2nd semester, students will revisit their plans and endorsement choices to make any changes. Four year planning and choosing an endorsement is going to be a focus for this school year, and we want our students and parents to feel good about their choices for high school. Please see the links for the video below and for the 9th grade course sheet. All of this information is available through your student's Google 8th Grade Guidance Classroom and more information can be found by clicking on the links below:

Tips from Nurse Martin
I care about your children. Each and every day that I see a child, or anyone for that matter, using nicotine, I worry about what the future holds for them. Will this be a gateway drug into something even more harmful, or will it be a trip to the ER with cardiac problems, or will it be a future with chemotherapy and radiation?
Now that you have read the article about vaping and Juul I would like to give you some more details about the e cigarette epidemic. Our teens are risking a lifetime of addiction using something they have easy access to and are not taking seriously. Please talk to your children today, their lives depend on it!
Nurse Martin
When nicotine is mentioned, most people think of tobacco products. Since tobacco products are legal, the common misconception is that they must be less addicting than all illicit drugs. If that were true, the Henningfield Rating of addiction for nicotine wouldn’t be nearly equal to that of cocaine and there would be significantly less people buying cigarettes.
Although you may not think that nicotine is as damaging as cocaine, the fact is that nearly 20% of deaths each year in the United States are a result of tobacco products – all of which contain nicotine. If we do the math, that means over 1,000 people are dying in the United States each day from deaths resulting from nicotine.
Henningfield Ratings
1.Heroin (9)
2.Alcohol (12)
3. Cocaine (15)
4. Nicotine (15)
5. Marijuana (27)
6. Caffeine (27)
Dr. Jack E. Henningfield is from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The Henningfield Ratings are a comparison of six common substances and assessment their addiction potential. They based their addiction potential on five criteria including: withdrawal, reinforcement, tolerance, dependence, and intoxication.
Fast facts on nicotine:
Here are some key points about nicotine.
Nicotine is at least as difficult to give up as heroin.
The side effects of nicotine can affect the heart, hormones, and gastrointestinal system.
There are more than one billion tobacco smokers worldwide.
Adolescent years are times of important brain development. Brain development begins during the growth of the fetus in the womb and continues through childhood and to about age 25. Nicotine exposure during adolescence and young adulthood can cause addiction and harm the developing brain.
In 2015, 1 in 6 high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the past month.
The risk of developing cancer from e-cigarette toxins may be up to 15 times higher than with cigarettes.
Addiction
Nicotine is one of the most difficult substances to quit once addicted.
Nicotine is highly addictive.
People who regularly consume nicotine and then suddenly stop experience withdrawal symptoms, which may include:
cravings
a sense of emptiness
anxiety
depression
moodiness
irritability
difficulty focusing or paying attention
The American Heart Association says that nicotine is one of the hardest substances to quit. It is considered to be at least as hard as quitting heroin.
Side effects
Nicotine causes a wide range of side effects in most organs and systems.
The circulation of the blood can be affected in the following ways:
an increased clotting tendency, leading to a risk of harmful blood clots
atherosclerosis, in which plaque forms on the artery wall
enlargement of the aorta
Side effects in the brain include:
dizziness and lightheadedness
irregular and disturbed sleep
bad dreams and nightmares
possible blood restriction
In the gastrointestinal system, nicotine can have the following effects:
nausea and vomiting
dry mouth, or xerostomia
indigestion
peptic ulcers
diarrhea
heartburn
The heart can experience the following after taking in nicotine:
changes in heart rate and rhythm
an increase in blood pressure
constrictions and diseases of the coronary artery
an increased risk of stroke
Other effects include:
spasms in the lungs
pneumonia
tremors and pain in the muscles
increase levels of insulin and insulin resistance, contributing to the risk of diabetes

Applications and essays are due back to CMS 8th grade English teachers – Mr. Woolley or Mrs. Sloan by November 15th at 3:25. Please contact the counseling apartment for further questions.
