Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ April 21st, 2017
From the Administrator
I'm so proud to share with you that our school was recently notified that we will be officially recognized by the Department of Public Instruction as a School of High Achievement and of High Academic Progress on May 1, 2017 at the State Capital. To earn this recognition students must perform in the top 10% for achievement and the top 10% for student growth in Math and Reading. Thank you to our staff for their hardwork and dedication to the learning of our students. Also, thank you to our parents. You are an important component to your child's success. Your support at school and home makes a difference!
Speaking of hard work- We have four of our hard working educators who will be moving on to a new chapter in their lives at the end of this school year. Mrs. Maureen Ciganek (Art), Mrs. Sandy Workentine (Gr. 4), Mrs. Carolyn Sloan (MS Math) and Mrs. Carol Kuehl (Special Ed) are all retiring. Combined, these teachers have served our school for 70 years and even more to their profession. Please be sure to wish them well if you see them between now and the end of the school year.
Sincerely,
Lynn Davies
District Administrator

Teaching and Learning at Stone Bank
English class has been filled with many creative opportunities this spring! Take a look at some updates from Ms. Bolinski’s room:
6th Grade: Before break, 6th grade worked on a unit where they storyboarded, filmed, and presented a public service announcement (PSA) about a topic that they care about. Some topics included cyber bullying, tying one’s shoelaces, animal care/adoption, and recycling. Students celebrated their hard work and creativity by ending the unit with a PSA film festival. Most recently, they have been practicing for the Forward Exam and analyzing responses to Forward Exam practice prompts.
7th Grade: After many essays this year, 7th grade journeyed into the realm of documentary filmmaking by fine-tuning their skills with iMovie. They storyboarded, filmed, and presented a documentary on a topic of their choice utilizing at least four elements of documentary films that were discussed and analyzed in class. 7th grade enjoyed their own film festival at the end when we viewed films on topics such as best friends, guinea pigs, online gaming, legos, and even a pet dachshund. Since then, 7th grade has been celebrating poetry month by exploring a variety of different styles of poetry.
- 8th Grade: Testing was in full swing for eighth grade prior to break. 8th graders practiced different strategies for standardized tests. Aside from testing, 8th grade spent time reading to/with their K5 buddies and exploring tone and mood through repetition in poetry. Their most recent essay assignment encouraged an exploration of universal truth in literature.
Student Council
Recently, Student Council sponsored a student from Guatemala via an organization called Compassion. Our student’s name is Angel Elias (Ahn hail Eh lee ahs) Zacarias Candido. He is seven years old. His birthday is June 10. Compassion allows sponsors to write letters and send photos. We have chosen to sponsor a child because poverty is real issue in our world, and we want to help others. Student Council has committed to giving $38 a month to Compassion so that Angel can receive support for his education and health.
We invite families in the Stone Bank School community to stop by and view our display window (in the commons) which highlights a picture of Angel and other facts about him. Do you sponsor a child from another country? If so, would you consider sending in a small picture of your child, his or her country name and your family’s name? We would like to create a world map display that shows students around the world who are sponsored by local families. Please send your information to Student Council ℅ Sra. Hoffman.

National Histroy Bee Regionals
Stone Bank School participated in the National History Bee for the first time this year. Out of 100 Stone Bank students who took the computerized history test, 72 qualified to compete in the Regionals. 22 of those students competed in the 4-hour Regional National History Bee competition. This involved two rounds of oral competition with a buzzer system and two rounds of a written test. Congratulations to the students who qualified for the National Competition in Atlanta Georgia in June: Olivia Bartman, Aidan Jacobsen, Jackson Brunner, Matthew Puetzer, Jack Rankin and Wade Lindmark. Special recognition to the two 6th graders, Jackson Brunner and Wade Lindmark, who were among the top eight students of their division to compete in the finals.

BizTown
Fourth and sixth graders are not old enough to work, vote or be the boss; however, at JA BizTown they are! Stone Bank students learned about how businesses function in a community in the classroom and then went to JA to demonstrate their learning. At JA Biztown, students were able to operate a bank, restaurant, city hall, newspaper, retail stores and other businesses. This field trip combined in-class learning with a day-long visit to a fully interactive, simulated town. Students left BizTown understanding the relationship between what they learn in school and their participation in a local economy. To sum up the day, Mayor Olivia Smith stated, “Here at Biztown, it’s easier when you work with others. We can collaborate and share ideas because then your work is done twice as efficiently and has twice as many great ideas.”
Thank you to the following parents who volunteered their time and talents at Stone Bank’s BizTown experience.
Mrs. Heather Smith, Mrs. Sara Kureck, Mrs. Megan Bakar, Mr. Craig Henschel, Mrs. Maria Draeger, Mrs. Maureen Ralston, Mrs. Holly Lambert, Mrs. Jennifer Warwick, Mrs. Jennifer Koplin, Mrs. Sarah Myers, Mrs. Kassie Knuth, Mrs. Jenny GIlroy, Mrs. Hollie Edgerton, Mrs. Lynn Hanusa, Mrs. Carrie Sindorf, Mrs. Tricia Puetzer, Mrs. Jenn Greco, Mrs. Tammy Pulvermacher
Fluid Power Competition
The NFPA Fluid Power Challenge is a competition that challenges typically eighth grade students to solve an engineering problem using fluid power. Students work in teams to design and build a fluid power mechanism, and then compete against other teams in a timed competition. This is the first year that Stone Bank School competed. Our teams attended a workshop at WCTC in March to learn how about fluid power and the task. They took home supplies and practiced building their unique structures for five weeks. Last week, teams rebuilt their own creations in the morning and competed in the afternoon.
Stone Bank School sent two teams of 6th and 7th graders. The all girl team made up of: Myla Brunner, Olivia Smith, Katie Kysley and Abigail Krahe was named The Mako Sharks. The Mako sharks proved to be a tough competitor! The other team, The Hydraulic Dragons, was made up of: Jared Koeppel, Aidan Jacobsen, Hans Jacobsen and Owen Jacobsen, came in first place!! These boys combined their unique talents and clearly outperformed their peers. Congratulations to these Stone Bank students for representing our school with pride and for putting forth effort and demonstrating perseverance in the Fluid Power Challenge.
Math Meet
The regional Math Meet was held at Swallow School on Wednesday, March 29th for 7th & 8th graders and on Thursday, March 30th for 5th and 6th graders. The competition included events from problem solving and mental math to team rounds and quick computations. Teams were chosen by top performance on the math meet screener exams. Congratulations to the following students for qualifying, attending and excelling in a rigorous event. Special recognition to Jackson Brunner for winning the 6th grade division, Aidan Jacobsen for coming in 2nd place in the 7th grade division and to Myla Brunner for coming in 4th place in the 6th grade division.
