Principal's Message
Greetings Fir Grove Families!
We hope this month’s Newsletter finds you well. It’s been a fabulous month full of Donuts with Divas, Oregon Battle of the Books, and a Ballet Assembly. We want to send a special shout out to the PTO and of course all of the parent volunteers who made all these events possible. We love our Fir Grove community and are so thankful to partner with you every day.
State Testing is on the horizon. In late April/May, grades 3-5, will engage in the Smarter Balanced Assessment. We will be sending out a testing letter to grade 3-5 parents within the next couple of weeks that explains the purpose, content, and structure of the Smarter Balanced Assessments, as well as opt out information. There are new revisions to the test this year that shortens the duration of the test. You will learn your child’s specific testing dates from his or her teacher. Stay tuned for more information in upcoming newsletters and communication through your teacher(s).
Warmly,
Erin Miles

Childcare Questions
Music Notes
When asked about the right time for children to start music education, revered musicologist and educator, Zoltan Kodàly, is noted for his reply. He answered: "Nine months before the birth of the child.” He then added moreover: “Nine months before the birth of the mother."
All Fir Grove students receive ninety minutes of sequential, standards-based music instruction every six school days, and they grow tremendously musical and literate throughout their years in elementary school, but their music education really started long ago at home, with their parents and grandparents.
Did you sing lullabies to your child when she was a baby? Did you play bouncing, tapping, tickling, or clapping games? All of these will become part of your child’s repertoire that he will pass on to the next generation if you remember to sing them every so often.
In case you’ve forgotten the lullabies from your childhood, or in case you’re ready for a few new ones, ask your Kindergarten or 1st grade student about the lullabies we’re learning in class. I added a new one to the music room website just this week! It’s called Shoheen Sho, which is Irish Gaelic for “hush-a-bye”.
