Snail Mail
September 1, 2021
Dear Snail Lake families,
We are very excited to meet you tomorrow for our Early Connection Meetings and our Open House! It’s going to be a great way to kick off the start of the year! We have had to order a new part for our air conditioning system, and as we wait for that part to arrive, it may be warm during your visit to Snail Lake. Thank you for your understanding.
Below are several key messages as we start the year. Specifically, I would like to draw your attention to the Virtual Tour that is linked below. This is a detailed and student-friendly visual tour of our building. We have gotten feedback from families in the past that this is a great source of information for families and helps the child to visualize where they will go throughout their day.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2
We are excited to welcome all incoming kindergarten families to our scheduled Early Connection Meetings and Open House this Thursday! Thank you for scheduling your time in advance with your child’s teacher. When you arrive, please enter through the main doors at the front of the building. You will be greeted there and provided a building map along with directions for a scavenger hunt to complete after your child’s Early Connection meeting. To help ensure the day runs smoothly, please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your child’s Early Connection meeting. Classroom teachers will have directions on where to put your child’s school supplies. (If you are in need of support in purchasing school supplies, please contact the front office and we are happy to help!)
VIRTUAL TOUR
Here is a video Virtual Tour of Kindergarten (8 minutes). We encourage you to view this useful information with your child before the first day of school. It is written in student-friendly language and is full of actual pictures in our building!
OFFICE HOURS
Typical front office hours are 8:00 - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. This upcoming Friday, September 3 and Monday, September 6, our office will be closed for Labor Day. The front office will resume hours on Tuesday, September 7. If you ever have a question and don’t know who to direct it to, feel free to email snaillake@moundsviewschools.org. This email account is managed by our front office team.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
As a reminder, the first day of school is Wednesday, September 8. Please start your anticipated routines on the first day of school (such as riding the bus). Guests will not be allowed into the building, so please take first day of school pictures prior to arriving at Snail Lake. There will be staff to escort students to their classrooms to begin their day.
BREAKFAST
Students have the option of eating breakfast in the cafeteria when they first arrive at school (prior to going to their classroom). Staff will ask them “Will you be eating breakfast today?” when they first arrive so please help your child know her/his response. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria. After breakfast, adults will help students get to their classroom to hang up their backpack and jacket and then enter the classroom. Please help your child know if she/he will eat school breakfast each day.
SNAIL LAKE PROMISE
For many students, kindergarten will be their first school experience. To support all students, we explicitly teach our expected behaviors in each of the common areas of our school. These expectations support our Snail Lake Promise, which is “At Snail Lake, we promise to practice self-control, empathy, and cooperation. When it is safe for everyone, learning is a lot of fun!” Students and staff recite this pledge each day on the morning announcements.
SCHOOL SPIRIT DAYS
Snail Lake is a safe and joyful community where every child is nurtured, challenged, and empowered to be a curious and successful lifelong learner. One way that we foster a sense of community and connectedness is with monthly school spirit days. On these special days, students and staff are invited to dress according to our monthly spirit day theme. Here is a list of the 2021-22 Spirit Days.
MITIGATION MEASURES
To ensure the safety of all, masks will be worn by students and staff while in the building. Additional mitigation measures include cleaning of high traffic spaces, proper hand hygiene practices throughout the school day, staggered schedules to minimize large numbers of students in hallways at a given time, social distancing will be encouraged as much as feasible, and our ventilation systems will continue to operate at full capacity for air exchange. Students will have assigned seats in their classrooms, in the lunchroom, in specialist class, and on the bus. For more information regarding our district’s mitigation measures, view our website at Safe Return to In-person Learning Plan for 2021-22.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the front office at 651-621-8000.
