Wonder by by R J Palacio
I read this book last Spring and shared it with Katie. I thought that it would be a great read aloud for 5th grade. It would have a great message for any upper grade. I highly recommend it. Here is the publisher's description: August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances? http://rjpalacio.com/book.html
Storm Runners Series by Roland Smith
If you and your class love adventure books, these would also be a great read aloud or book series to suggest to your upper grade readers. (3-5) Chase Masters and his father are "storm runners," racing across the country in pursuit of hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. Find out what happens when the biggest hurricane of the century hits. http://www.rolandsmith.com/
Frankly, Frannie by AJ Stern
Frankly Frannie would be a fun read aloud series for K-3 students. I have just started booktalking these and they are all gone already. Frannie is a mix between Junie B. Jones and Clementine. She tries to do the right thing, but trouble seems to follow her. Check it out at www.franklyfrannie.com/.
One More Suggestion for a Read Aloud!
